That life-power, revered by many kings of many eons ago, is present now, because in its own time, it is a dharma whose path of birth is blocked. If such a proof is stated, what would one say? If the sign is not established, then it would follow that it died in its own time, because in its own time, the life-power was blocked. You yourself have admitted this pervasion hundreds of times. If you accept that, then it would follow that it died at a time when it had not died. If there is no pervasion at the root, then establishing that dharma as present is not based on relying on its own time, but the present entity will not be blocked in its own time or in other times. If you accept that, then it will become a permanent entity. If the previous year is not an entity, then it would follow that this year has no cause, and if the following year is not an entity, then it would follow that it is not the result of this year. If it disintegrates in the second time from the time it was established, then it would follow that it is disintegrating, because the one revered by many kings is disintegrating, so it is not established as an entity. If you accept that, then today, it is disintegrating, because it disintegrates in the second time from the time it was established. If you accept that, then it would follow that it is not an entity, because it is disintegrating, so the three times are admitted. If the sign is not established, then, knowable, it would follow there, because in tomorrow's time, today is disintegrating. It would also become a permanent entity. Since you believe that what is past is definitely not an entity, then saying that the definition of the past is birth and cessation is just babbling that what is not an entity and what is born are necessarily so. Furthermore, there are many ways to express the relative establishment of the three times, which are easily understood as gross errors. In today's time, yesterday's disintegration is the basis for the definition of the past, but in today's time, the disintegrated yesterday is not the basis for the definition of the past. Similarly, the basis of an unsprouted sprout is not established. The sprout that has the cause of the arising of a sprout that has not yet sprouted, the sprout that has not yet sprouted has no cause of arising, and so on, should be understood in this way. If you understand in this way, then, just as the previous party refutes from before dawn, all the statements of those who say the sun rises are like children babbling nonsense, which will be easily understood. Second, refuting the faults of the Vaibhashikas and others: Those debaters say, if the expressing sound acknowledges the general characteristic as truly existent, then say

If, because sound and meaning as entities exist, one does not want the senses, etc., to become meaningless, then, in this way, the fault of the senses, etc., becoming meaningless does not exist; it is not so, because such a generality is inexpressible. Even if expressed, there is a fault, like this: this generality is not similarly subsequent to all that is manifest, nor is it dependent on the manifest to make it manifest, because it is independent of the manifest. If admitted, then it contradicts what is actually admitted in the fundamental tenets. If, independent of the manifest, it becomes the object of apprehension of the general-apprehending consciousness, then the fault of constantly focusing on it will occur, which needs to be clearly pointed out. These contents, up to the phrase "who can overcome it," are easy to understand. Third, refuting the fault of analyzing the extremes of doubt to avoid faults: If the self-characteristic of a thing itself, through being concealed, acts as the object of apprehension in an unclear manner, this is dependent on the auxiliary condition of the expressive sound. The self-characteristic of a thing, when it manifests, actually depends on the senses, etc. Therefore, both take the same self-characteristic of a thing as the object of apprehension. Even so, the collection of senses such as the eyes will not become meaningless. If one says this, then the answer is that it is unreasonable for manifestation and non-manifestation to appear separately when focusing on the same object, because one sees impermanence, etc., initially appearing unclear, and later appearing clearly manifest through the power of habituation. It is unreasonable to infer that there is no difference between manifestation and non-manifestation based on the reason that the same self-characteristic of a thing is similar as the object of apprehension, because this contradicts differences such as near and far. Therefore, from the auxiliary condition of sound, the conceptual mind that apprehends form arises, and the form appears unclearly in a concealed manner, and through the auxiliary condition of the senses, the mind relies on the senses, and the form appears clearly in a manifest manner. Where do these two different differences come from? Such a difference is unreasonable, because both of these minds take the same entity of the self-characteristic of form as the object of appearance, and there is no difference in their destruction. That is to say, if the wisdom of Devadatta is like this, then the same thing is both manifest and non-manifest.
