The mere term "quiescence" (zhi gcig), when viewed in relation to different points of reference, is both its own characteristic (rang mtshan) and a general characteristic (spyi mtshan). Holding this view is easily mistaken as a dark illusion (mun spryl). The aspect of the apprehended image (gzung rnam) is its own characteristic. To say that the aspect of the apprehended image that is externally attributed is a general characteristic, and to explain this as the meaning of this treatise, is a great error. It is extremely difficult to prove that the apprehended image of one's own conceptualization (rtog pa) is fabricated as an external form (gzugs) and that this basis is established. Even if it were established, it would be contradictory because such a manifestation of form would follow all forms. Because if it is a form, it contradicts being that. Here, if, as stated in the commentary of the deity, it is considered to be the self-characteristic of the general because it is the nature of knowledge, then there is no contradiction. The "general also" that appears in the text means the apprehended image that grasps the general. How is that a general? The explanation is that it is the general of the nature of the thing. The "also" that appears in the text does not refer to the apprehended image also, but rather, how is the appearance that appears to that conceptualization a general? That is the meaning. Here, as an aside, just as the hair-falling illusion of the sense consciousness (dbang shes) appears as hair falling, and this is said to be the object of appearance and the substance of that sense consciousness, is the sense consciousness that sees the image of the face in the mirror similar? For the eye consciousness (mig shes) that is clear about the mirror, the image of the face in the mirror appears, but it does not appear as an image, but as a face. And the conceptualization grasps it as an image, not as a face. For those who are not clear about the mirror, the conceptualization also grasps it as a face. For the eye consciousness of these people, the appearance of the image of the face appearing as a face is the object of appearance and the substance of knowledge of that eye consciousness, and not an external object. Then, is the appearance of blue to the eye consciousness that grasps blue also the substance of knowledge? It is not the same. For the eye consciousness that grasps blue, the appearance of blue is blue itself. But for the eye consciousness that sees the image of the face in the mirror, the appearance as a face is not established as a face. Therefore, these two eye consciousnesses have a difference in the object of appearance, whether it is mistaken or not. This principle is the key to understanding the difference between the way the Sautrantikas and the Prasangikas acknowledge external objects.
