Whether the departed ones appear or not, the suchness of dharmas remains. The suchness mentioned is existent. What is this suchness? It is the nature of these, such as the eye. What is the nature of those? It is the unconditioned nature of these, such as the eye, not dependent on other causes for arising, and the essence to be realized by the wisdom free from the darkness of ignorance. These statements refute those who do not accept the existence of ultimate truth and suchness, and also well refute those who say that when the obscuration of ignorance is removed, there is no wisdom at all. If suchness exists, who would say it does not? If it does not exist, then why would Bodhisattvas cultivate the path of the perfections? They would not. If ultimate truth does not exist, then realizing it would not reach the ultimate state. If it does not exist, then cultivating the path would be meaningless. Because it is for the sake of realizing suchness and bringing it to the ultimate state that Bodhisattvas strive through hundreds of hardships. This shows that those who think that the ultimate truth of suchness is not an object of any mind, yet still strive on the path, are showing themselves to be of very dull faculties. As it is also stated in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: 'Son of good family, ultimate truth is unborn, unceasing, indestructible, uncoming, ungoing, not to be expressed by letters, not to be described by letters, and not to be realized by elaboration. Son of good family, ultimate truth is inexpressible, peaceful, and to be individually known by the noble ones themselves. Son of good family, whether the Thus-Gone Ones appear or not, for what purpose do Bodhisattvas shave their hair and beards, wear saffron robes, and with true faith go forth from home to homelessness? Having gone forth, it is in order to attain that suchness that they exert themselves like their hair or clothes are on fire, and abide in an indestructible state. Son of good family, if ultimate truth did not exist, then celibacy would become meaningless.'

If that were the case, the appearance of the Tathagatas would be meaningless. Because ultimate truth exists, bodhisattvas are called experts in ultimate truth. This is stated very clearly. What is inexpressible and cannot be understood through elaboration is that, just as the ultimate truth is seen by non-conceptual wisdom, it refers to the meaning that sound concepts cannot take as their object, not that it cannot be understood in general. When showing the harm of the non-existence of ultimate truth, and when showing that its opposite is abandoned, it is also said to exist, and it has also been shown to exist before. Therefore, distinguishing between non-existence and non-non-existence is merely showing that intelligence is extremely low. In many versions of Patsab's translation, there are phrases such as "Whether it appears or does not appear, for whose sake," while in Nagtso's translation, there are phrases such as "Even if it does not appear, the ultimate truth will not decay," which is consistent with the sutra quoted in the previous commentary, "Even if it does not appear, the nature of phenomena remains." Therefore, it is good. Here it is said: Alas! For anything, you neither admit that it is established by its own nature, nor do you think that there is a nature that is not false and does not depend on others. You are saying contradictory things! This is because you do not understand the meaning of the Madhyamaka treatises. The meaning here is that if the nature of the eyes, etc., is the dependent arising that can be grasped by ordinary beings, then if this is the true nature of the eyes, etc., because this nature can be directly known even with a perverted mind, then pure conduct will become meaningless. Because the eyes, etc., are dependent arising, this is not the true nature, so in order to see it, pure conduct becomes meaningful. As it is said, the negation of self-nature is the negation that the eyes, etc., are reality, and the admission of self-nature is the admission that what is negated is the self-nature of the Dharma-nature of the eyes, etc. Therefore, there is no contradiction between negating the establishment of the self-nature of things and admitting the self-nature of the Dharma-nature of things.
