If one accepts it according to the literal meaning, it will be no different from the "self" of the heretics. These reasons have already been explained in detail elsewhere, so I will not elaborate on them here. In the commentary, it is also said in the same way, quoting from "That Same": "The characteristics of great wisdom, emptiness, non-arising, non-duality, and absence of self-nature, are contained within the sutras of all Buddhas." Below the quotation, it says: "Therefore, in this way, all the sutras of this kind that are said to be understood by those who speak of consciousness-only are said to be definitive meanings, and this quote clearly shows that everything is provisional." Such sutras are not the two sections of the Lankavatara Sutra that were just quoted, because neither of these two sections is accepted as definitive by the Vijnanavada school, and because the interpretation has already been clearly explained in the commentary on the Explication of the Thought Sutra. The statement "this quote" refers to the explanation in the commentary on the Ten Bhumi Sutra, when refuting the agent in the context of dependent origination, which is very unreasonable, because the refutation of other agents is the word "only" in the Ten Bhumi Sutra's statement "only mind," which is said to be the basis for not preventing external objects, and not as a basis for showing that preventing external objects is provisional. Therefore, how can this quote clearly explain the provisional meaning in the root? Among the three quotes, the one that shows that the mind-only that prevents external objects is provisional is like the four sentences "how is the patient." The one that shows that the alaya-consciousness is provisional is the quote that shows that the eternal Tathagatagarbha is provisional. If it is said that showing the existence of the eternal Tathagatagarbha is provisional, then how can the alaya-consciousness be established as provisional? In the Ornament of Dense Array Sutra, it says: "The various grounds are the alaya-consciousness, and the Sugatagarbha is also the same. The Tathagatas use the name alaya-consciousness to indicate that garbha. Declaring the garbha to be the alaya-consciousness, other wise ones will not know." The Lankavatara Sutra also says: "Declaring the Tathagatagarbha alaya-consciousness, along with the seven consciousnesses." These two are repeatedly said to be different names. Although it is said that one of these two is permanent and the other is impermanent, so on the surface it seems that these two meanings are not the same, but considering the meaning of showing the Tathagatagarbha, it is considered that the alaya-consciousness is.

Because it is a name that arises according to the meaning indicated by the teachings, the meaning is the same. In this way, since the former has been shown to be provisional, the latter will also naturally become provisional. The commentary says: 'Because it follows the nature of all things, it should be understood that only emptiness is shown by the name of the Alaya-consciousness.' Thus it is said. Combining this with the essence of permanence etc. being shown as provisional, it is necessary to understand that the scripture shows the Alaya as provisional. From 'Great Wisdom Emptiness' etc. until the end of 'understand this', the sutra says: 'In whatever sutra, one should understand this meaning in it.' What is said is that distinguishing the difference between existence and non-existence of the two natures initially by their respective entities is a statement of provisional meaning. Secondly, now, in order to clearly explain that the Mind-Only spoken of by reason is provisional, an explanation is given. For those who have accumulated merit, just as stories of generosity etc. are first told as a means to easily enter the Dharma-nature, for those trainees who cannot realize the profound meaning from the beginning, the Buddhas gradually lead them to realize selflessness. For such people, if it is first shown that the knowable does not exist in external objects, then it is easy to find that the knowledge is established by its own nature, as the Buddhas have said. Therefore, the non-existence of the knowable, that is, the initial negation of external objects, is also a method for fully realizing selflessness. The Buddhas initially only spoke of negating the knowable of external objects, and if the knowable does not exist, that is, external objects are selfless, then the negation of knowledge, that is, its selflessness, is easily established. If knowledge is understood through the selflessness of external objects, then knowledge without self-nature is sometimes realized by oneself, and sometimes it is realized by only a slight indication from others. The non-existence of external objects and the existence of knowledge by its own nature are provisional, as is clearly stated in the Bodhicitta Commentary: 'All these are Mind-Only, whatever the Able One has said, is to eliminate the fear of children, that is not Suchness.'
