To say that "what is said is also shown to be definitive" is a false statement, because it is clearly explained in the commentary that what is said in the Mind-Only is definitive. Therefore, just as saying that Mind-Only is definitive with "how the patient" etc., saying that the essence of permanence is definitive also establishes that the alaya-consciousness spoken of in the Interpretive Commentaries etc. is not literal. Therefore, one must first know that the teaching of the essence is not literal. The Lankavatara Sutra states: The sutras are taught according to the minds of sentient beings, which is a reversal of meaning, and not the only word. For example, just as a mirage is not water and deceives deer who crave water, the teachings that are taught also please children, but are not the words that delight the wisdom of the noble ones. Therefore, you should follow the meaning and not be attached to the words. Mahamati asked: In the sutras, the Tathagatagarbha is said to be naturally luminous, pure from beginningless time, possessing the thirty-two marks, and present within the bodies of all sentient beings. Just as a precious jewel is wrapped in a dirty cloth, it is wrapped in the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas and becomes dirty. If it is said to be permanent, stable, and enduring, how is this different from the heretics' doctrine of the self? The answer is that this teaching is not literal and is therefore different from the heretics' self. The intended meaning is that emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness are the selflessness of phenomena. The reason for this teaching is to dispel the fear of children who are afraid of selflessness, and to gradually lead those who are attached to the heretics' doctrine of the self, and those who are accustomed to that view, to the truth, therefore the essence of permanence, stability, and endurance is taught, and therefore it is said that bodhisattvas of the present and future should not be attached to the self, and if they are attached to the literal meaning, it is the same as being attached to the heretics' self, so they should not be attached to the literal meaning. The literal meaning harms reality, which is
