Because it is Dharma, these Dharmas are the possessing Dharma, and the person is the basis of possession that those Dharmas possess, and it is said to be the basis upon which the person is designated. The eighteen kinds of mental activities are: for the six pleasing objects, there are six kinds of feeling of pleasure that are close to the activity; for the six displeasing objects, there are six kinds of feeling of suffering that are close to the activity; for the six neutral objects, there are six kinds of feeling of equanimity that are close to the activity. Because relying on the power of pleasure, pain, and equanimity, the mind repeatedly dwells on objects such as form and sound. Therefore, it is called the near activity of the mind. Thus, among the two aspects of the object of innate ego-grasping, the aggregates are neither the object of focus, nor is there its object that is different in nature from the aggregates. Because the object of ego-grasping is not inherently existent, the yogi, from not focusing on the self as inherently established, also knows that what is mine is not endowed with the essence of inherent existence. By severing the bonds of all conditioned samsara, one will surely attain nirvana without taking future rebirths. Therefore, none of the parts or collections of the five aggregates, nor anything that is different in nature from them, should be regarded as the object of the view of self. Even so, one can skillfully establish the person who is the object of the view of self. And relying on these reasons, establishing the person as emptiness, free from inherent existence. This kind of investigation is most beautiful for those with extremely sharp faculties who desire liberation, because this captivating quality is not found in other tenets. Fifth, when seeking the imputed meaning of the object of grasping "I", according to the schools that some say are all five aggregates, and some say are only the mind, as long as the aggregates arise in one's own continuum, the idea of grasping the person as self will arise. If one seeks and establishes the imputed meaning of the idea of "I", then it is the basis for grasping the person as self, because it exists as a real object of the aspect. When one wants to directly realize the selflessness of the person, one merely abandons the permanent self, that is, sees it as non-existent. This permanent self is the innate ego-grasping of the view of the perishable.

Not wanting to be a basis, i.e., any object or form of a state. Therefore, being accustomed to the knowledge of seeing the non-existence of merely a permanent self, to say that it can completely uproot the view of self that has entered from beginningless time is truly wonderful! Merely seeing the non-existence of a permanent self, wanting to abandon the self-grasping that has been from beginningless time, this very reason, in order to clarify its unrelatedness with worldly examples, the following example is given: Some foolish people, seeing a snake living in the cracks of their house walls, remain there in fear. Another person says to them, 'Hey, don't be afraid, there are no elephants in this house.' By dispelling their doubts in this way, merely knowing that there are no elephants in the house, not only does it not eliminate the fear of elephants, but they also want to abandon the fear of snakes, which is truly an object of ridicule for other wise people! Although the cause of the fear of snakes is imminent, foolish people, because they do not see the fear of snakes from the words of others, do not try to eliminate this fear, but instead relax their vigilance because they know there are no elephants, and as a result, they will be bitten by snakes. Similarly, being accustomed to seeing the non-existence of merely a permanent self, like an elephant, they think they can eliminate the fear of self-grasping that has been from beginningless time, like a snake, and thus relax their vigilance. In this way, they cannot eliminate the view of self born from the self-grasping that takes the aggregates as its object. Therefore, this person will certainly not be able to escape samsara. This shows that many who want to ascertain the suchness of things in their own and others' schools, because they do not understand how innate self-grasping grasps its object, abandon it and exert themselves to establish a reality different from it. All these efforts are meaningless. Understanding this is very important! The third part is divided into two points: refuting the view of having a basis and that which relies on it, and summarizing and showing the meaning of what has been refuted. The first point is: Thus, after explaining that the self is not one with or different from the aggregates in nature, in order to explain that there is no self-established nature between the self and the aggregates in terms of mutually being a basis and that which relies on it, the following is said: For the aggregates, i.e., for it, the self-nature
