, and relying on that, other dharmas also clearly show the selflessness of dharma in a way that is no different from this. Therefore, strive to understand well these unique views held by the wise ones who fully reveal the extremely subtle intentions of the Buddha Bhagavan! The second point is: If it is said that one should only look at these five aggregates of grasping, although this is a way of showing the aggregates as self from the perspective of establishing, it does not show each aggregate as self. What then? Like this, when saying "the aggregates are self," it refers to the collection of aggregates being called self, but it does not refer to the nature of the aggregates, i.e., each individual being shown as self. For example, when saying "trees are a forest," it refers to the collection of trees being a forest, but it does not refer to each tree becoming a forest, therefore the nature of each tree is not referred to as a forest. This is illustrating with an example that is established for others. If it is thought that the collection is self, then, the self is said to be a protector, a tamer, or a master. According to your view, the mere collection is not a protector, nor a tamer or a master, because the mere collection does not exist as a substance. Therefore, the self is not a mere collection of aggregates. Regarding the way I am said to be a protector, etc., the sutra says: "Oneself is one's own protector, oneself is also one's own enemy. For the good and bad done, oneself is one's own master." From this, it is explained that one is a protector and a master. It also says: "By oneself being well tamed, the wise will attain high status." The third point is: If it is thought that the collection is not different in essence from the one with the collection. Therefore, the result, i.e., acting as a protector, etc., will be understood as belonging to the ones with the collection, so it is reasonable to be a protector, a tamer, and a master. Sometimes the word "self" refers to the collection of aggregates, and sometimes it refers to the one with the collection who is closely associated with the aggregates. Regarding this practice of arbitrarily associating the word "self" with each individual, it has been said before that it cannot be obtained. There are also other faults, when it is thought that the collection of aggregates is self, the various parts of a chariot gathered in one place,

There would be the fault of becoming sectarian, because the establishment and non-establishment of both the chariot and the self on their own collection of limbs are the same. The same is also shown in the sutra, where it says: "What is called 'self' is the mind of Mara, you have become a view. This aggregate of formations is empty, there is no sentient being in it. Just as relying on the collection of limbs, one speaks of a chariot. Likewise, relying on the aggregates, one conventionally calls it a sentient being." Thus it is said. Secondly, as previously explained, the sutra says that sentient beings are designated in dependence on the collection of aggregates, therefore, the mere collection of aggregates is not the self. To clarify this with words that establish this point, that which is designated in dependence on something is not merely the collection of limbs that are the basis of designation, because it is designated in dependence, just like things transformed from the elements. For example, taking the elements as the cause, blue and so on, and eyes and so on, which are transformed from the elements, are designated, but these two are not merely the aggregation of the elements themselves. Similarly, the nature of the self, which is designated by taking the aggregates as the cause, should not be merely the collection of aggregates themselves. If the sutra says that it depends on the collection of aggregates, even if the collection cannot become a person, but only "likewise depends on the aggregates," there is nothing else, therefore the collection of aggregates is not the basis for establishing a person, if you think so, that is not right, because in the example of the metaphor, "just as relying on the collection of limbs," it is said that relying on the collection of limbs, one speaks of a chariot, therefore, when aligning the meaning of the chariot and the metaphor, in the example of "likewise relying on the aggregates," even if the collection is not directly mentioned, it must be added, which is very clear, therefore the great scholar says that this is the method of exerting the power of each phrase of the sutra, and if understood carefully, it will create joy in the mind. If you say that vases and so on are uncertain, that is not the case, because vases and so on are also not established as merely the collection of forms and so on, and there, too, arguing and examining like the "self" is the same. This is like the "self" cannot be established on its own collection of parts, vases and so on also cannot be established on their own collection of limbs.
