Furthermore, here it is seen that self-grasping occurs. For example, some sentient beings have spent many eons in the animal realm, and even though so much time has passed, they still cannot escape the state of being animals. Even for those who have not seen the unborn and permanent self posited by the tirthikas, it is seen that self-grasping occurs. Therefore, how could a wise person cling to such a self posited by the tirthikas as the basis for self-grasping? Therefore, there is no self that is different in nature from the aggregates. The word "also" includes beings born in hell and so on. The second (part) has five (sub-parts): revealing the faults of holding the aggregates as self; revealing the reasons why it is not reasonable to hold it that way; revealing other faults of asserting the aggregates as self; explaining the intention of saying the aggregates are the self, etc.; revealing the irrelevance of other tenets. The first (part) has two (sub-parts): the actual meaning and refuting the answer to avoid faults. The first (part) has two (sub-parts): stating the former view and refuting that tenet. The first (part) is: Here, some of our own schools say that since there is no established self that is different in nature from the aggregates, therefore, viewing the self as (the aggregates), that is, the object of the two objects of the view of the perishable collection, is only the aggregates. Because it must be either an entity different from the aggregates or taking the inner aggregates as the object, since the former is not reasonable. Therefore, they claim that the self is merely one's own aggregates. This view belongs to the Sthavira school, etc., that is, the school that reveres many noble ones. Among them, some who revere (the noble ones) even more assert that the basis for the view of self, that is, the object, is all five of their own aggregates, and they say that this appearance of clinging to self also comes from these five aggregates. As the Blessed One said, "O monks, whatever śrāmaṇas or brahmins correctly contemplate 'self,' they correctly contemplate only these five aggregates of grasping." Therefore, in order to clearly state that "your view is of a collection that is by nature perishable, and not of a self or what belongs to a self," for the view that enters into the aspect of self and what belongs to self, it is the view of the perishable collection.

Thus it is said. Having said that, based on the statement "The five aggregates of clinging are me," it is acknowledged that the object of the view of self is the five aggregates. Some who are well-versed in the scriptures believe that only the mind is the "self," because it is said in the verse: "Oneself is one's own protector, Who else could be the protector? By oneself being well-tamed, The wise will attain higher realms." From this verse, it is known that the mind is referred to as the "self." From where does this come? Because there is no self that is different from the aggregates, and also in other sutras, it is said to tame the mind, because "Taming the mind is good, taming the mind brings happiness." Therefore, the basis of self-grasping, the mind, is called "self." In the Blaze of Reasoning, it is also said, "Thus, we also nominally refer to consciousness as 'self,' because consciousness takes rebirth, so it is 'self.'" This is because the collection of body and senses is the proximate cause. Moreover, some sutras say that taming the mind leads to happiness, and some say that taming the self leads to higher realms, so the mind is regarded as "self." The taker of the aggregates is the "self," and consciousness takes rebirth, so consciousness is regarded as "self," which is a logically established statement. These teachers do not accept the alaya-consciousness, so the consciousness that takes the body is the mind-consciousness. Other schools that do not accept the alaya-consciousness are also similar. Those who accept the alaya-consciousness say that the alaya-consciousness itself is the basis of the person. Although these schools believe that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers can realize that the person is not substantially existent, they do not believe that these two consciousnesses are not substantially existent. Therefore, saying that the person is not an independent substantial entity is established from the self-reversal of the person, not that the basis of the person, consciousness, is like that. Second, if the five aggregates of one's own continuum are the view of "self" is established, then because the aggregates are many, one person will also have many "selves." If the view that the mind is the "self" is established, then because there are differences in consciousnesses such as eye-consciousness, or because there are differences in the arising and ceasing of multiple consciousnesses in each moment, the "self" will also become many.
