According to the treatises, all those specific characteristics of the self that are taught by the non-Buddhists, to all of those, because they are harmed by the reason of non-origination that is acknowledged by the non-Buddhists themselves. That is to say, all the previously mentioned explanations of the specific characteristics of the self according to the Samkhya and Vaisheshika schools should be refuted as non-existent. In this way, for all those who claim to have a self, with the reason of non-origination and the example of the son of a barren woman, one should clearly recognize the nature and characteristics of the self that they posit. Therefore, there is no self that is different in essence from the aggregates, because it is not established how to grasp that self apart from grasping the aggregates. If the self is different in essence from the aggregates, then since there is no connection between the two, it will become unrelated. At that time, it would be necessary to grasp it in the same way as grasping a cloth without grasping a pot, but such a thing has never been seen. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: The self is not suitable apart from That which is taken up close. If it were other than that which is taken up, There would be no taking up. And if there were something to be taken up, It could not be taken up. And: If it were other than the aggregates, It would be without the characteristics of the aggregates. It is said that "that which is taken up close" refers to the aggregates. Another fault is that this self, which is different in essence from the aggregates, should not be considered the basis, i.e., the object, of the mind of self-grasping of sentient beings in the world from beginningless time. Because if, as posited by the non-Buddhists, that self is not awareness, that is, if it does not grasp its form, then clinging to specific characteristics will lead to viewing "I" and "mine" as self. This does not contradict the previously refuted statement that "this should not be the basis of the mind of self-grasping either," because previously it was refuted that the self, merely as a substance, is the object of the view of self, whereas here it is refuted that the self, which is different in essence from the aggregates, is the object. If some people now do not understand that self that is distinguished by being permanent, unoriginated, etc., but due to previous habits, will they also have a view of self-grasping that has that self as its object? That is not the case, because it is only those whose minds have been transformed by bad philosophical systems who hold the self that is different in essence from the aggregates as the basis of self-grasping. For those sentient beings who do not have the habit of bad philosophical systems from before,
