That is to prevent establishment by its own nature. If the view of the perishable collection is abandoned, then all faults will be reversed. Therefore, this analysis of self is a method for achieving liberation. As it says in the Compendium of Trainings: If the emptiness of a person is so truly established, then, because the root is cut, all afflictions will not arise at all. As it says in the Noble Tathagata's Secret Sutra: Peaceful wisdom is like this, for example, if a tree is cut from its root, then all the branches, leaves, and small twigs will wither. Peaceful wisdom is also like that, if the view of the perishable collection is near to peace, then all afflictions and near afflictions will be pacified. It is said like that. The wise ones agree that one should first understand the faults of samsara well and contemplate them, then identify what its root is, and then, when one wants to abandon it, one must not err in the method of abandonment, and one must find a view of selflessness that prevents its object of attachment, and become familiar with its meaning. It should be known that this is necessary for both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. If, in the Precious Garland, it says: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, then there is also karma. And from karma there is birth. Here, clinging to the truth of the aggregates and clinging to the self of phenomena are said to be the root of samsara, while here, the view of the perishable collection is said to be the root of samsara, these two are contradictory. Since the roots of samsara are inconsistent, it is unreasonable. If you say that, there is no fault, because according to this system, the two self-grasps are distinguished by their objects, but there is no difference in the form of grasping, because both have the form of grasping as established by their own characteristics. The contradiction between the two roots of samsara is because the two inconsistent ways of grasping objects are taken as the root of samsara. Therefore, when the clinging to the self of phenomena is shown to be the cause of the view of the perishable collection, it shows the two parts of ignorance as cause and effect. When it shows that both of these are the root of affliction, it shows the root of all other afflictions that are inconsistent with oneself and the way of grasping. Moreover, this method is present in both of them, so it is not contradictory, just as the two similar types of ignorance, earlier and later, do not contradict the root of samsara.

The second (chapter) has two parts: refuting the self that is established by its own nature, and refuting the self's possession that is established by its own nature. The first (refuting the self that is established by its own nature) has six parts: refuting the self that is established by other schools as being different in essence from the aggregates; refuting the self-school's assertion that the aggregates themselves are the self; refuting the remaining aspects of these two, namely the three aspects of the support and the supported, etc.; refuting the substantially existent person who is neither the same nor different; explaining that the self is established as merely imputed in dependence, along with examples; and showing the benefit that, by establishing it in this way, it is easier to abandon the thought of clinging to permanence. The first (refuting the self that is established by other schools as being different in essence from the aggregates) has two parts: stating the former position, and refuting that system. The first is: If asked, "What exactly is the self that is the object of the view of the collection of destructibles?" Since you do not know it, please explain it. This has two parts: stating the tenets of the Samkhya school, and stating the tenets of the Vaisheshika and other schools. The first is: Briefly, it is the enjoyer, that is, the one who experiences pleasure, pain, etc., and is not the agent of permanent entities and transformations, does not have the qualities of the nature of dust, darkness, and power, and because it is pervasive, it is without action, so the non-Buddhist Samkhyas contemplate. Among them, the Samkhyas say: "The root nature does not transform, the great and other seven are both nature and transformation, the sixteen are transformations, and the person is neither nature nor transformation." Thus they say. Among them, because it produces results, it is nature. Where does it produce? At the time when the person sees desire. When desire arises with the aspect of closely enjoying objects such as sound, at that time, the person's desire combines with the nature that knows all and the person, and then the chief emits sound and so on. The way of it is this: From nature comes the great, from that comes ego, from that comes the eleven faculties and the five "that-ness" (tanmatras), that is, the collection of sixteen. From the sixteen also come the five elements, that is, from the five "that-ness" comes the five elements, from the five, sound and so on, comes the five elements, this is the order. The term "does not transform" means that it is only able to produce results, but it does not transform like the great and so on. The seven, the great and so on, are also able to produce.
