Explanation: If things had some inherent nature, then there would be no other possible distinctions of arising. Without doubt, they would either arise from themselves, from others, from both, or from no cause, or become objects of perception. Even according to those who manifestly assert that things arise from Īśvara and so on, those Īśvara and so on would either become self, become other, or become both. Therefore, those who speak of Īśvara and so on as the cause also cannot escape the faults already stated. Therefore, there is no fifth distinction of the cause that produces. Therefore, since there is no other, and since the imputation of arising is refuted by the four distinctions, it is to show that things have no inherent arising. For what reason? Because there is no arising from self, other, or both, and no arising without depending on a cause, therefore things are devoid of inherent establishment. Thus it is said. Although this refutes the four extremes of arising by consequence, in the end, on what sign does it rely to show the way of inferring arising? That is, the absence of arising from the four extremes is the reason. 'Things' is the subject. 'Devoid of inherent establishment' is the proposition. The second has two: the actual meaning, and showing it by summarizing its meaning. The first is: If things are without inherent arising, then how are the unborn blue and so on apprehended? Since the inherent nature of blue and so on in any way does not become the object of appearance of some defiled by ignorance. Therefore, the consciousness of such eyes and so on does not apprehend the inherent nature of blue and so on. Then, what is it that repeatedly appears as the very nature of the object? What should this become? Since this appears due to perversion, it is not inherent nature, but only by the power of defilement by ignorance does it focus on that self. To show this, it is said: Because of what, that is, because of what, the dense darkness of ignorance, like a mass of black rain clouds, covers and obscures the sight of the inherent nature of blue and so on, which exists in the minds of sentient beings in the world, therefore.

For the things on the ground, it is not possible to see the self-nature of blue and so on. For the various realms, the place where the self-nature of the realms appears reversed and is clung to, this will only appear to those children who cling to this as true. If the true nature cannot be seen because of the obscuration of ignorance, then what is the reason for seeing it reversed? It is clear that it is not established by its own nature, but it appears there, which is precisely because of the power of ignorance, in order to show this principle from external examples. Just as some people with blurred vision, due to the power of blurred senses, will reverse hairs, two moons, peacock feathers, and bees, that is, cling to what does not exist as if it exists, and see it. Similarly, due to the fault of ignorance, unskilled ordinary people will use wisdom, that is, use their knowledge of them, to understand and see the various compounded things such as blue and so on. This is what is said in the Sutra of Dependent Arising: "Conditioned by ignorance, there are formations." Similarly, the person (Pudgala) associated with ignorance: will also create meritorious actions, will also create non-meritorious actions, and will also create unwavering actions. Just like this, the Blessed One also said: "When ignorance ceases, formations cease." Therefore, in this way, if it is said that the karma of actions arises depending on ignorance, and that without ignorance that karma will not arise, then this is undoubtedly only understood by those who are not proficient, that is, they are swayed by them. When seeing that those who are proficient say "Conditioned by ignorance, there are formations," not only do the formations comprehend the emptiness of no self-nature, but also through the sunlight of the good wisdom of realizing the suchness of dependent arising, they completely eliminate and abandon ignorance like thick darkness, and they also do not cling to the karma of formations, because they have abandoned the cause of clinging to that karma—ignorance. Therefore, one will surely be liberated from samsara. In the Compendium it says: Any Bodhisattva who knows dependent arising with wisdom, without birth and without destruction, like the sun without clouds, radiating light, dispelling darkness.
