Near. Iron quickly and completely revolves. There is no mind on it. It appears as having a mind. Similarly, the Alaya-consciousness, Not being true, but as if true, When it moves and changes, Then it holds existence. Like wood in the ocean, Even without a mind, it moves. Similarly, the Alaya-consciousness, Relies on the body and moves. How is it correct that the Alaya-consciousness holds existence as stated? That is, by preventing external objects other than the mind, and without preventing the Mind-Only doctrine that Mind-Only is established by its own nature, it is to dispel the fear of all children towards the teaching of emptiness. It is not the ultimate truth, and the purity of the mind transformed by the Yogacharas, something established by its own nature, each individually acknowledged as the object of knowledge. If the acknowledgment is prevented, if the mind is not true, then the act of moving and changing from the previous life to this life, and from this life to the next, is unreasonable. To answer the dispute residing in the heart, just as iron and wood move as if they have a mind even though they do not, similarly, although the Alaya does not truly exist, it appears as having movement and change as if it truly exists. Because it is taught in this way, it is not like the Alaya-consciousness described in other treatises, acknowledging that it is established by its own characteristics. If even though one does not acknowledge that the Alaya is established by its own characteristics, but acknowledges that it is different in nature from the six consciousnesses, like an illusion, all the seeds of all pure dharmas, then if one acknowledges such an Alaya, after the habits of the Alaya ripen, it merely appears as forms, sounds, etc., and one must acknowledge that there is no external object. In that, it is said: Consciousness knows the knowable, without the knowable there is no consciousness, in that case, why not acknowledge that both the knower and the knowable do not exist? Because the external knowable and the internal consciousness are the same in existence and non-existence, if one does not exist, the other does not exist. In this treatise, the object and consciousness are the same in non-existence in the ultimate sense, and the same in existence in the conventional sense, therefore, in the two truths, it is unreasonable to distinguish between existence and non-existence for the two. Because there is no difference from what is said, the consciousness without an external object exists, is the scholar

This is not the view of the Vaibhashikas. Therefore, they do not accept the alaya-vijñana, which is different in essence from the mind consciousness. So, saying "alaya" refers to: generally, only the mind's knowing and clarity is established as the alaya; especially, it refers to the mind consciousness, which is in response to the negation of the mere mind-nature being established by itself. Because the mind, in the absence of truth, has the manner of being able to act and be acted upon; because it is the mind that holds birth in samsara; and because the mind consciousness is the basis of all defilements and purifications. In the Madhyamaka-hrdaya, the literal meaning of alaya is also refuted. The teacher Yeshe Nyingpo also said: Outsiders do not accept the alaya. For the Mind-Only school that refutes external objects, there also appear to be two cases of accepting or not accepting the alaya-vijñana. The teacher Kamalashila, who does not accept external objects, also said: Only the mind of consciousness has the power to connect with the next life. As it is said: Severance and connection, free from desire, decay and death, transference and existence, are considered only as mind consciousness. As quoted from the Abhidharmakosha, it is clear that the great teacher Shantarakshita also does not accept the alaya-vijñana. Abhayakaragupta is also the same. In other Mahayana scriptures, the alaya-vijñana is also mentioned, but it does not seem to clearly identify the non-understanding of mere names. Analyzing the meaning, it seems that it only does not accept things that are different in essence from the six consciousnesses. Moreover, this view seems to be on the side of those who accept external objects, so this name is given to the mind consciousness. These need to be determined in detail, but I have not written them for fear of being too numerous. Thirdly, in order to guide the trainees, at first, only the alaya-vijñana and so on were taught. However, for example, although the view of the aggregates of fear has been abandoned with its habitual tendencies, and all the conceptualizations of grasping at "I" and "mine" have been abandoned, saying "I" and "mine" is a means for the world to understand the meaning of the Dharma. Similarly, although things do not exist by their own nature, saying "nature exists" is the meaning of guidance, which is to gradually lead the world to realize Suchness.
