Since manifest cognition and sense cognition, as well as self-cognition manifest cognition, cannot be established as valid cognitions, they are established as mental manifest cognition. Although mental manifest cognition is inconsistent with epistemologists, it is not that mental manifest cognition is not accepted. In this way, the so-called feeling is a word related to the agent, action, and object, so this person feels, this action feels, and feeling like this will become three types. The second of these is valid cognition, namely mental factor feeling. The third is the object to be measured, namely pleasure, pain, and equanimity. This is also in terms of mental consciousness, and the three feelings of sense consciousness completely determine form, sound, etc. The way it is established is as previously explained. So, if the feeling of mental consciousness manifests pleasure, pain, etc., will it not become self-cognition? There is no such fault, because the self-cognition that is being negated is that all consciousnesses look inward, the knowable and the knower appear as different, and the grasping aspect disappears in a scattered state. Here, the Sutra says that special experience is the characteristic of feeling. Moreover, in worldly terms, it is also said that one experiences pleasure and pain. Because the experiencer and the experienced appear as different, it is different from the previous self-cognition. Therefore, feeling is established simply by experiencing pleasure, etc. On the level of mental consciousness, if the form born from the sphere of phenomena, such as the clear appearance of a skeleton, appears, then by the arising of those aspects in the mental consciousness, those are established, and the establishment of the consciousness that grasps them is the same as before. Those objects are different in nature from mental consciousness. How is the consciousness of mental consciousness, such as the two graspings of self, established? The Commentary on the Root Text says: If the basis, self-nature, or general characteristic exists in the world, then all of these should be perceived by manifest cognition, and therefore are not hidden. Therefore, the consciousness that has it as its object is also established as manifest cognition. This should be understood through this passage. Among them, the two words basis and that which is to be signified are the same in Sanskrit, so some translators translate it as basis, and some translators translate it as that which is to be signified.

Therefore, this indicates that all the characteristics that are signified and all the bases that are to be signified should be regarded as being manifestly perceived. The reason for saying this is that it is the occasion for establishing direct perception as the valid cognition among the four valid cognitions (pramāṇacatustaya). It is not that the omniscient one also shows what is manifestly perceived, but following this, the cognition that arises from not being mistaken about the object that is to be proven by inference, which is hidden, is inference. As it is said, this shows that all self-characteristics and general characteristics are manifest, and not hidden. Therefore, whichever of the two, self-characteristic or general characteristic, the cognition focuses on, the appearance of those two will occur. That appearance itself is the directly perceived object of that cognition, so both the object and the consciousness that possesses that object are established as directly perceived. This is because they hold that the term "direct perception" applies directly to the object and indirectly to the consciousness that possesses the object. If any appearance that appears in any cognition is the directly perceived object of that cognition, then that appearance is manifest to that cognition. And if that is a non-deceptive cognition to it, then in the world, a non-deceptive cognition is known as a valid cognition, so it will become a valid cognition. At that time, when the measurable appearance is established by that cognition, the establishment of the object-possessing consciousness is as before. Therefore, even in something like the two graspers (dvaita), the appearance of the two appears manifestly. At that time, the measurable appearance is manifest, and that appearance is established by the object-possessing consciousness, etc., just as before. Furthermore, one should also understand the delusion towards the object of clinging. In this way, all cognitions are similar in that the appearing object, which appears as an object, is established as manifest. However, there is a great difference in whether or not they become valid cognitions in relation to the two selves and the two selflessnesses, and form, etc., permanence and impermanence, etc. Therefore, the establishment of the distinction between valid and invalid cognitions in the mind is also accomplished. All those explanations of mental consciousness as a valid cognition for the appearing object are because those manifest objects are made into the direct perception of the mind, because other extremes are excluded. Self-awareness does not become a direct perception, because it possesses the appearance of duality towards that object. Even though the appearance of duality disappears in the uncontaminated wisdom of meditative equipoise (samāpatti), the nature of reality (dharmatā) and that itself become the knower and the known. All cognitions look inward, and even though the appearance of duality reverses, the knower and the known remain. These two are not at all the same, the latter
