I will ask in order to know. To this, it is unreasonable for consciousness itself to grasp consciousness itself, because it is contradictory for oneself to act upon oneself. For example, the blade of a sword cannot cut itself, the tip of a finger cannot touch itself, even a well-trained horseman cannot whip his own shoulder with a hooked whip, fire cannot burn its own self, and the eye cannot see its own self. Here, it is unreasonable for consciousness itself to grasp consciousness itself, and the other special tenets that are said will be explained. Consciousness is not grasped by another consciousness that is different from itself, because this contradicts the tenet of the Mind-Only school itself. If, when the transformation of the basis into the fruit has not yet been attained, a phenomenon other than consciousness is the appearing object of consciousness, then the assertion of Mind-Only will collapse. Because it is said in the Mind-Only treatises. Therefore, if one follows the Mind-Only view, then such grasping is completely non-existent in any way, and it is not permissible to say that it exists even without being grasped by consciousness, when the Madhyamika says this, the Mind-Only person says: Even if consciousness is not grasped by another entity, self-awareness does exist. Therefore, since only self-awareness grasps the other-powered, it exists, if it is said, then it is not established that consciousness itself experiences it. Here, I will briefly explain the source of the Mind-Only school's acceptance of what kind of self-awareness. In the Blaze of Reasoning, it says: The Mind-Only school believes that consciousness appears as two, namely, appearing as self-appearance and appearing as object. The consciousness that appears as an object is transformed into the aspect of an external object and becomes the object of the consciousness that appears as self-appearance, if it is said, as an answer: Other than appearing as an object, what kind of mind appears? It says that other than appearing as an object, that is, appearing as oneself separate from it, has not been seen. Thus, the Mind-Only school believes that consciousness looks inward, and all appearances as two are inverted, and they consider such consciousness to be self-awareness that knows itself, even so, in the nature of consciousness, there is no appearance of the knowable and the knower being different. In the Self-Commentary on the Two Truths, it also refutes self-awareness by saying: Consciousness is devoid of two.

It is the nature of knowing oneself that appears, and it can only be known without it. If it is not like this, it is unreasonable. As it is said, when the Mind-Only school establishes the emptiness of the other-powered (paratantra) grasping and grasper entities of the imputed nature, it is by knowing that the other-powered is the nature of being devoid of dualistic appearance, and when self-awareness is established, then it can be known that that basis is not a grasping and grasper entity. If it is not like this, when that basis is not established by self-awareness beforehand, it is not established to establish the imputed nature as emptiness based on that. As it is said, according to your view, the proof of the other-powered must be established by self-awareness that is devoid of dualistic appearance, but that is not established, so it is prevented. Therefore, by preventing such self-awareness, yogis each prevent the self-awareness of knowing Suchness in their own way, and worldly people say that the self-awareness of the meaning of the term "I know myself" is prevented, which is foolish talk. The second has two parts: stating the views of others and refuting those views. The first is: Here, some say that the Mind-Only school accepts the Sautrantika school in order to establish self-awareness. Just as fire, when it arises, does not allow itself and the vase, etc., to appear gradually as two, but appears all at once. When one says "vase," it focuses on the sound itself and the meaning of the vase, both of which arise. Similarly, when consciousness arises, it does not appear separately and gradually as two, but knows both itself and the object all at once. Therefore, self-awareness exists. Anyone who does not accept self-awareness must necessarily accept self-awareness, because if they do not accept it, then later recollection of the object, saying "I saw this thing before," and the experience of the object, thinking "I saw it before," will not become recollection of the object. Why? Because it is impossible for recollection to arise for something that has not been experienced before, and recollection is the object of previous experience. According to your view that does not accept self-awareness, the consciousness of perceiving blue, for example, has not been experienced in its own time, so later recollection will not be established. This is established from the sign of recollecting that previous experience of perceiving blue. If one establishes that the previous perception of blue has self-awareness of self-experience, then it is an example established for others.
