When I take it in my hand, although the body consciousness grasps the touch of that iron, that touch does not arise as very hot and burning, this is because of the cause of washing hands with water that has been recited with mantras. In the absence of reciting such mantras, the touch of the iron lump will arise as very hot and burning. In this way, both the non-burning and the burning touch must be the touch of the same iron lump. Since the two body consciousnesses, one established touch is not established by the other, even if both are acknowledged as valid cognitions, what is established by one valid cognition is not negated by the other. Similarly, in any place where a river flows, one part of that river, due to the karma of the yakshas, becomes pus and blood, while another part of the river, due to the karma of humans, does not appear as pus and blood, but becomes drinking water and bathing water, because both of these are parts of the same river. The meaning established by the valid cognition of the yaksha's eye consciousness and the meaning established by the valid cognition of the human's eye consciousness are also different things, so how can these two, the meaning established by one, be the opposite established by the other? Similarly, in the "Letter to a Friend" it says: "For the yakshas in summer, the moon is also hot, and in winter the sun is cold." This also says that due to the karma of the yakshas, the touch of moonlight in summer is very hot, and the touch of sunlight in winter is cold, but it is not contradictory that the light of the moon and sun produces a state of cold and warmth for humans. These two are not that one valid cognition measures the touch as hot, and the other measures it as cold, and because both are established as the touch of the light of the same moon and sun, it is also said to be one thing, so it is not okay to be satisfied with a rough understanding without carefully analyzing the meaning of the scriptures and to draw conclusions too early. Second, if we briefly summarize the contents explained in detail earlier, just as knowable things do not have inherent existence, so too the consciousness that has the state of knowable things does not arise from its own nature, please understand this meaning and cherish it, thus speaking, the difference between what is knowable and what knows in terms of inherent existence and non-existence.

This is to explain that there are no images, and if there is no hairbrush, then the consciousness that appears there is also absent, and that clinging to illusions as horses and cows, if there is no object of clinging, then the consciousness that clings there is also absent, and so on. These are definitely not the views of this teacher. In the "Praise of the Transcendent," it is also said, "Without understanding, there is no object of knowledge; without that, there is no consciousness. Therefore, you say that knowledge and the object of knowledge are without inherent existence." Similarly, "Consciousness is said by the Kinsman of the Sun (Buddha) to be like an illusion. Its object is also the same, and is certainly like the object of an illusion." Thus, if one cannot establish "with such a consciousness," then one cannot establish the object of knowledge as an object. If one cannot establish "with this consciousness, one knows such an object," then one cannot establish it as consciousness. Therefore, without the object of knowledge, there is also no consciousness. Because consciousness and the object of knowledge are established in dependence on each other, you say that both are without inherent existence. Therefore, the view of the noble ones is that in the two truths, there is no difference between one existing and the other not existing. In the "Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment," it is said, "Consciousness understands the object of knowledge; without the object of knowledge, there is no consciousness." This has the same meaning as the praise quoted earlier, and is therefore the source of the equality of knowing and not knowing in meaning. The second part has four points: refuting the establishment of other-dependence as self-awareness; showing that the tenets of the Mind-Only school are deficient in both truths; therefore, it is reasonable to follow only the system of Nagarjuna; showing that the negation of other-dependence and conventional truths are not the same. The first part has four points: refuting the establishment of other-dependence by questioning it; refuting the answers of others who consider other-dependence to be reasonable; showing that self-awareness is unreasonable by other reasoning as well; showing that the inherent existence of other-dependence is like the son of a barren woman. The first point is: Having shown that consciousness is impossible without external objects, now, in order to refute the inherent existence of merely the entity of other-dependence, which is not distinguished by the absence of external objects, it is said: If, because there is no apprehended external object, it is therefore devoid of the apprehending itself, which is different from it, and if other-dependence, which is empty of both apprehended and apprehending as different entities, exists, then the existence of this other-dependence is your consciousness.
