If there is no cessation of other-dependence, there will be no complete purification, because there is no basis. It is like a garment made of tortoise hair. Thus it is said. Similarly, the example of cataracts should also be stated. These are the ones. Among them, the first two combinations are: because the example is not established, the proof and the to-be-proven are the same, because in dreams there exists form, which is a source of phenomena different in nature from consciousness. The third combination is: because it is desired to establish that the basis of complete purification is established by its own character, for that, merely the absence of a basis is not established. If one considers it as established by its own characteristics, then it is uncertain. Thirdly, in this way, refuting the Mind-Only view, not only is it not harmed by reasoning, but it is not possible to be harmed by scripture, because the perfectly enlightened Buddhas have not, in any of their own scriptures, stated that things exist truly. That is, in the Lankavatara Sutra it says: The three realms are merely imputed, by nature there are no things. Those who speculate impute the imputed as the nature of things. Without self-nature and without consciousness, without alaya and without things, foolish children speculate, like corpses they contemplate these. Thus it is said. The first verse shows that the three realms exist only as imputed. The second verse shows its meaning, that is, it shows that there are no things established by their own nature. Therefore, there is no establishment by its own nature, but it is not that things do not exist at all. Thus, for things that are merely imputed, those speculators who have not found the meaning of suchness consider them to be things established by their own nature, and the two words "imputed" show this meaning. It generally shows that there is no establishment by its own nature, and specifically shows that rupa (藏文:རཱུ་པ་,梵文天城体:रूप,梵文罗马拟音:rūpa,汉语字面意思:form) refers to both self-nature and form, but here it refers to the corporeal, because of the power of the opposite of "consciousness." It has already been shown that the thing of "no thing" is the absence of consciousness and corporeal things, so here it refers to the essence, that is, the essence that prevents the truth of things, and other situations where there are no things. The state of being like a corpse is the absence of a mind capable of discerning suchness. That scripture shows the other-dependent nature of the three realms.

Therefore, the view that things exist inherently is refuted. If it is thought that those scriptures do not harm by showing that one dependent arising is empty of the nature of the other imputed apprehending and apprehended as different entities, that is not a valid emptiness, because the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says, "Great wisdom, the emptiness of one without the other is the worst of all emptinesses." Saying "Because a cow is a horse, it is empty, therefore it does not exist" is also unreasonable, because it exists by its own nature. The commentary says that one should say "because it exists by its own nature" and so on. It is good to translate "by its own nature" as "because the nature of black exists." How does the emptiness of one without the other become similar to this example? The emptiness of devoid of self-nature spoken by the Blessed One is to reverse the attachment of beings who, from beginningless time, have been attached to forms and other things as truly established. Therefore, it is necessary to show that this dependent arising, which appears as forms and so on, is not truly established. If it is not shown in this way, but it is shown that this dependent arising is not truly different entities of apprehending and apprehended, it is like saying "Because there is no cow, it is like there is no cow." Therefore, in the view of the Mind-Only school, there is no difference in the way that beings are attached to the basis of attachment, which appears as outer and inner phenomena. Although showing that these are empty is also to reverse the attachment to the basis, this is the same. However, the way of attachment is different. The Mind-Only school believes that the two, apprehending and apprehended, appear far apart, inside and outside, and that they are attached to apprehending and apprehended as different entities. As an antidote to this, they hold the appearance as a dependent arising phenomenon and prevent the existence of different entities of apprehending and apprehended. Therefore, the basis of negation is the object to be negated. According to the Madhyamaka school, the way of attachment is to be attached to appearances as truly established, not established by conventional minds. As an antidote to this, they hold the appearance as a phenomenon and prevent the existence of such truth. This is also to prevent the basis of negation from being the object to be negated, because when beings are attached, they hold that the object to be negated exists as something else on the basis.
