Ra gnas pa: It is called the proximate cause of the three times of a moment of formation. A moment is a part of something, and not just a continuous sequence of before and after. Because the moments of substance, which are parts of the permanent, exist, the moments of substance, which are limbs of the permanent, are called permanent. The parts and limbs of the permanent are of the permanent that has parts, so the permanent is called its proximate cause. For example, a vase is the proximate cause of the mouth and neck of the vase, and so on. These moments of before and after are mutually different from each other, and the opponent admits that they are otherness established by their own characteristics. In that case, from the power of the other, which is established by its own nature, another will arise. If you think that this is not a fault because of desire, then, therefore, all things will arise from all things other than themselves. If, again, it is thought that the moments of before and after follow in succession, and that there, the moments of the permanent substance are mutually different, established by their own nature, that is, there is otherness, but even so, for these moments of before and after, the permanent is without difference, because it is only one, so there is no fault of everything arising from everything, then, the continuity of before and after being one is the real answer to avoid the extreme of other-arising. If the separate before and after, established by their own nature, establish a single continuum, even if there is no fault, since the single continuum is not established, this single continuum is something to be established. Why is that? Because for the differences of before and after established by their own nature, there is no opportunity for a non-different continuum, that is, a single continuum. For example, relying on love and closeness, belonging to the continuum, because it is the otherness of each individual, it does not belong to a single continuum. Those before and after that are separately established by their own characteristics, those belonging to a single continuum, that is, being one itself, is not reasonable. In this way, in order to avoid the fault of throwing too much into other-arising, it is said that the sprout of rice and the sprout of rice are a single continuum, while the sprout of barley and the sprout of rice are not a single continuum, so not everything arises from everything.

ba. The key to not being able to refute the fault lies in the opponent's acceptance of the other as being established by its own characteristics. Therefore, it is not merely directed at the other, but it is very clear that if one makes a single refutation, etc., and does not understand that the "other established by its own characteristics" is the special characteristic to be negated, then, if one relies on the reason given by the venerable Chandrakirti himself that he cannot refute the fault, and makes up fabrications that have not been said, that is slandering the correct tenet. The second part is divided into two points: stating the views of others and refuting those views. The first point is: Since it has been taught in this way, the Mind-Only school again mainly states its own views, thinking that this will achieve its own wishes, and says: The mind of the eye, that is, the self-power of the arising consciousness, the habitual patterns in the base of all, when other consciousnesses disappear like themselves, they are immediately stopped. From that maturation, later the eye consciousness arises following the previous form. And, ignorant sentient beings think that the physical sense organ—the eye—is the basis of the uninterrupted moment of power from which the uninterrupted moment of power of that self, that is, the eye consciousness, arises. But the eye sense organ, which is different from consciousness, does not exist. Similarly, the remaining physical sense organs should also be applied. Therefore, the cause of the arising of eye consciousness—habitual patterns—is its causal condition, and the eye sense organ is the dominant condition of eye consciousness. Here, showing the eye sense organ as the direct cause of eye consciousness refers to the time when the habitual patterns of the arising of eye consciousness mature, not to any eye sense organ. Moreover, the Madhyāntavibhāga says: "Objects, sentient beings, and the appearance of self, the consciousness that appears, is said to be unreal and meaningless." This means that the consciousness that appears as things—form, etc.—and sentient beings—the five sense organs—arises, which is the ālaya-vijñāna, and the teacher Blo-brtan also said that the physical sense organs are the objects of the ālaya-vijñāna. Therefore, the Mind-Only school, which accepts the ālaya-vijñāna, believes that the eye sense organ, etc., which appear as physical sense organs in the ālaya-vijñāna, exist. After showing that the eye sense organ, etc., which are different from consciousness, do not exist, in order to show that form, etc., also exist differently from consciousness.
