It is through the way of light that it appears to the Buddha and is understood. Secondly, if because a person with cataracts clings to non-existent hairs, etc., even without an external object, consciousness should be inherently existent, if you say so, that is also unreasonable. Why? Because in the case where the faculty of the eye is together with cataracts, by what kind of wisdom can one see the hairs that appear from the power of the cataracts? If viewed from the perspective of that person's wisdom's appearance, both the appearance of eye consciousness and hair, that is, the object that appears as hair, are existent. If viewed from the clear appearance, that is, what is seen by an eye without cataracts, both the appearance as hair and the consciousness that manifests it are false, that is, unproduced. Because it is very difficult to ascertain that consciousness exists without an object that is merely an appearance. This must undoubtedly be determined in this way. If it is not so, if for a person with cataracts, in the absence of the knowable hair, a self-established consciousness with the image of hair can arise, then in the place where the person with cataracts sees the hair, the eye is closely following, that is, focused, then for a person without cataracts, like a person with cataracts, a consciousness of seeing hair will arise. Because it is the same in the absence of an object. This is like a self-established arising from another, if a self-established consciousness arises, then it will extend to arising from all others. In the absence of the object hair, it is the same, a person with cataracts will have the situation of seeing it arise, while a person without cataracts will not have the situation of seeing it arise, which is unreasonable. Because that consciousness can push without relying on cataracts, it will become unrelated. The arising of the consciousness that appears as hair to a person without cataracts is not like that, therefore, in the absence of an external object, self-established consciousness does not exist. The second part has three points: refuting the arising or non-arising of object-appearing consciousness from the ripening or non-ripening of habitual tendencies; again refuting the claim that consciousness exists without an external object; demonstrating that refuting the Mind-Only school does not have scriptural faults. The first part has two points: stating the views of others and refuting those views. The first point is: if the existence of an object like hair that appears as hair is the cause of the arising of consciousness, then hair will also appear to a person without cataracts.

If it were some other reason, that is not it. Then what is it? It is said that the habits of consciousness that have been previously left behind, those that are mature and immature, are the cause of the arising and non-arising of consciousness. Therefore, for any person who has a mature habit of consciousness with the appearance of hair, left behind by another, only in that person will the consciousness of hair-like illusions arise. Because for those who see objects clearly without cataracts, the power of the mind that perceives hair-like illusions, its habit is immature, therefore for those without cataracts, the mind that sees hair-like illusions will not arise. If it is said that the mind does not arise because the object of knowledge is separate from the object that exists as hair-like illusions, then (the following is a refutation). The second part has three aspects: refuting the self-existence of present-time capacity; refuting the self-existence of future-time capacity; refuting the self-existence of past-time capacity. The first aspect: If it is said that capacity is self-existent, then, even if it is allowed that capacity causes consciousness to arise or not arise depending on whether it is mature or not, this is not established because capacity itself is not self-existent. How is it not established? When thinking about this capacity, will it become related to present-time consciousness, or will it become related to past and future-time consciousness? Regarding this, first, for the arisen present time, the possibility of capacity being self-existent simply does not exist, and for the unarisen future time, capacity also does not exist. Regarding this, first, if it is thought that capacity exists in present-time consciousness, then both consciousness and capacity will exist simultaneously. At that time, for both capacity and the capable, if there is a distinction of the sixth case, "consciousness of capacity," then these two cannot be different entities, therefore "consciousness of capacity" cannot be capacity itself. If so, the result would be that there is no cause independent of itself, and when a sprout grows, the seed will not perish. When there is a distinction of the fifth case between capacity and the capable, "consciousness arising from capacity," consciousness cannot arise from capacity that exists simultaneously with the arising of consciousness, because when the cause exists, the effect should also exist. Therefore, first of all, for present-time consciousness, the capacity of its cause does not exist. The second aspect: Consciousness
