If you accept it, no matter whether you consider it permanent or impermanent, it is said that you will fall into the views of permanence and annihilation. Here, in the commentary on the Root Wisdom, it says: 'The Buddha emanates an emanation, and that emanation emanates another, just like that, the agent, the action, and what is done by it are also said to be like those.' Therefore, it shows that non-self-existence arises from non-self-existence. By saying this, it shows that there is no annihilationist view by establishing all actions and agents on what is not established by self-existence. Here, if the establishment by its own characteristics is not prevented in conventional truth, one will not realize the extremely subtle selflessness. Therefore, it is also difficult for the extremely subtle views of permanence and annihilation to arise in the mindstream. Therefore, completely abandoning the views of permanence and annihilation is the merit of preventing the object of negation from existing in conventional truth. If it is prevented in conventional truth, not only will one not fall into the views of permanence and annihilation that depend on ultimate truth, but one will also not be stained by the defilements of the views of permanence and annihilation in relation to conventional truth. Therefore, it has the merit of easily abandoning the views of permanence and annihilation. The second (part) has three (points): showing that it is not necessary to accept the Alaya, etc., because one does not desire self-existence; showing the example of the fruit arising from the cessation of karma; and refuting the arguments against such a presentation. The first (part) has three (points): explaining the connecting text; explaining the meaning of the root words; and explaining the meaning derived from it. The first (point) is: In this way, since there is no self-existence in either of the two truths, not only is the attachment to permanence and annihilation abandoned far away, but even if the karmas have ceased and a long time has passed, the connection between the fruits of the karmas and (the karmas) does not require complete speculation about the Alaya consciousness, the stream of mind, non-loss, and attainment, etc., and is also reasonable. In this way, it shows that for the school where self-existence does not exist even in name, not only does it have the merit of extending the views of permanence and annihilation far away, but even if the Alaya, etc., are not accepted, the connection between karma and its result is very reasonable. Regarding the way to explain the scriptures of the noble ones, even if there is not a particle of self-existence, it is sufficient to establish all actions and agents. Relying on this uncommon way of explanation, there are many uncommon points with other (commentators) who explain the pure school. What are they?

If we talk about the main points, they are: the alaya-vijnana, which is different in nature from the six consciousnesses; the uncommon way of refuting self-awareness; and the three points of not accepting that the application of svatantrika reasoning generates the view of suchness in the minds of opponents. Also, just as consciousness is accepted, external objects must also be accepted; sravakas and pratyekabuddhas have the realization that phenomena are without inherent existence; the clinging to phenomena is established as afflictions; destruction is real; and for these reasons, the way of establishing the three times is also uncommon, and so on. The first of these is what is being explained here. The reason why not accepting self-awareness is related to not accepting inherent existence will be explained. The reason why not accepting svatantrika reasoning is related to this has already been explained extensively elsewhere, and a brief summary will also be explained here. The connection to accepting external objects will be explained, and the fifth point is also related to this, namely, when Buddhapalita says in the sravaka pitaka that 'all phenomena are without self,' the self that is the basis of absence is said to refer to inherent existence, and this is also the view here. This is also the meaning of the complete characteristic of selflessness. Therefore, the complete characteristic of the selflessness of persons must also refer to the fact that the self of the person himself is not inherently established, and to realize this as it is, one must also realize the selflessness of phenomena as it is, which is the key point. If this is the case, then it must be definitively accepted that clinging to phenomena is an affliction, so in the recognition of afflictions, there are two types, coarse and subtle, and two views on whether or not liberation can be achieved merely through the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., and many differences, such as where the boundary for abandoning the obscurations to knowledge lies. So, firstly, it is necessary for both Madhyamikas to accept that it is possible for someone who has entered the Great Vehicle and has a well-established view of suchness to fall into the state of a sravaka or pratyekabuddha, and that these two have a common basis. If this is the case, then it must be accepted that such a person, by meditating on the selflessness of phenomena, will make it manifest, and that they have already seen and become familiar with it in this way. If this is the case, then it must be accepted that this path abandons the imputed clinging to phenomena from the path of seeing, and also abandons the innate self-grasping from the path of meditation. Therefore, clinging to things as being established by their own characteristics.
