Pages 201 to 300. Pages 201 to 300. If there is no arising, then it must be acknowledged. The second has two parts: stating the former view and refuting that system. The first view is: Those of our own school who assert substantiality say that arising from oneself is meaningless, so self-arising is unreasonable. Since there is no self-arising, arising from both is also unreasonable. Causelessness is utter annihilation, so refuting it is also reasonable. What is there to observe from others? Therefore, preventing other-arising is unreasonable. Because, considering the scriptures that say the four conditions that transform into others by their own characteristics are the causes of the arising of all substantial things, even unwillingly, one should acknowledge arising from others. Where are these four conditions established? Some schools say that the causal condition, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge, is: "Cause is called the five causes," which are the five causes other than the agent cause. The objective condition is: "Object, all phenomena," which are all the phenomena that are the objects of the six consciousnesses. The immediately preceding condition is: "Mind and mental factors that have arisen, the last is not similar, that is immediately preceding," which are the previously arisen minds and mental factors other than those entering into non-remainder. The dominant condition is: "Agent cause, is said to be dominant," as in the explanation of the agent cause. The six causes are as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Agent cause, co-emergent and, similar in fortune, corresponding and possessing, pervasive and ripening, cause is thought of as six kinds." So it is. Some schools say that, from the definition of "that which accomplishes is the cause," whatever exists as the cause of the arising of something, in the nature of a seed, that is the causal condition of that thing. Like an old man rising, the minds and mental factors that are arising, like relying on a crutch, by what object are they produced, that is the objective condition of that thing. The immediately preceding moment of the cessation of the cause is the immediately preceding condition of the arising of the result. For example, the immediately preceding moment of the cessation of the seed is like the condition of the arising of the sprout. The self-commentary says that the immediately preceding moment of the cessation of the seed, like the similarity of the sprout, is the immediately preceding condition. In the Clear Words, also, when preventing the immediately preceding condition, it prevents the similarity of the sprout from being the immediately preceding condition. Buddhapālita also thinks the same way, therefore, for form, the similarity is also equ

This is about how to understand the view of the dominant condition. If something exists, then what arises is its dominant condition. In the Clear Words, it is said that what arises before, what arises simultaneously, and what arises later, etc., are also included in these, and in the self-commentary it is also said that those other than the first are the same. As it says in the Lamp of Wisdom: "The conditions examined by other schools are those that arise before, exist, and do not exist." Although the meaning is the same when translated in this way, it is better that way. Its meaning is that in the commentary, the name established by the school of the Sthaviras, the condition that arises before, is the objective condition that arises before the manifestation of the senses. The existing condition is the co-existing condition and the dominant condition. The non-existent condition refers to the immediately preceding condition. Such differences in names, if examined in terms of their definitions, are all included in these four conditions. Isvara and others are not conditions, so the fifth condition does not exist. This should be understood with certainty. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The four produce mind and mental factors, the three produce two kinds of meditative absorption, the other two arise from those two, Isvara and others are not sequential, etc." This is how it is asserted. The second part is divided into two parts: refuting the general position that asserts other-origination, and specifically refuting the view of the Mind-Only school. The first part is divided into five aspects: directly refuting other-origination, eliminating the worldly faults that arise from the refutation, showing the merits of such refutation, explaining that nothing arises by its own nature, and showing the merits of refuting self-origination in both truths. The first part is divided into three aspects: generally refuting other-origination, specifically refuting other-origination, and refuting other-origination by examining the four possibilities of the result. The first part is divided into two aspects: refuting through absurd consequences, and refuting the defense against faults. The first part is divided into two aspects: direct absurd consequences, and examining their limits. The first part is: this other-origination cannot be established, because it contradicts reason and scripture. The latter contradicts many scriptures, such as the Rice Seedling Sutra, which says: "The sprout of name and form is not made by me, nor is it made by another." If we speak from the perspective of reason, if a cause that is established by its own nature depends on other things, in the way of its own nature.
