All things that are parts of a sprout are mistaken. Since no other thing such as a vase other than a sprout is obtained, it is thought that destruction is definitely not a thing. Because the things of each of the sense bases such as blue, and the collection of things of its own parts such as a vase, cannot be the basis of that destruction, it is thought that it is not a thing. According to the latter view, for example, each of the five aggregates of appropriation and both the collection, and one that is different in nature from those two, cannot be established as the basis of appropriation. Moreover, appropriation cannot be the basis of those three. Just as it is not contradictory that a thing that is designated as appropriation depending on its own aggregates is a thing, destruction is also a thing, although there is no thing to be destroyed, and no thing of the same kind as it, as a basis, because it arises depending on the thing to be destroyed. To prove this, the first of the two scriptures and reasonings stated in the Clear Words is: The Sutra of the Ten Grounds states: "Aging and death are caused by the condition of birth." Death is the destruction of the sentient being that has died, and it is said that it is produced by the condition of birth. Moreover, it is also stated in the same sutra: "Death also abides closely in two actions, namely, it also destroys actions, and also produces the cause of the uninterrupted stream of complete ignorance." Thus, it is stated that death performs two actions, namely, death acts as a cause, and death also produces ignorance. Therefore, destruction has the cause of production, and destruction is able to produce the result. Although this is continuous destruction, it is the same for the destruction in the first moment and the second time. It is also shown that the first moment is the cause of destruction in the second time. Therefore, whether or not sentient beings are established as things, whether they are born and die, and whether they do not remain in the second moment, and whether they do not remain in the second moment, are all the same in terms of whether or not they produce a cause. With this in mind, the Root Verses of the Middle Way state: "Existence and non-existence are conditioned." And the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning also state: "From the exhaustion of the cause comes peace, one should contemplate the exhaustion of the cause." Thus, the things of sprouts and so on, and the non-thing of that destruction, are both conditioned. Just as the exhaustion of the cause like oil is the exhaustion of the result like a flame.

As it is said, one should undoubtedly accept it according to the wishes of the noble ones. The destruction of the first moment in the second time is that one must actually realize it by cutting off what is to be refuted. Refutation is "is," and non-affirmation is not "non-affirmation," so it is "non-non-affirmation," because the cause of destruction is not just cutting off, but abandoning the thing that has been cut off. The remaining arguments should be known in detail from the commentary on the Root Wisdom. This is a subtle and meaningful reasoning of this system. Secondly, even if one does not accept the Alaya consciousness, one must accept the establishment of the habits of virtue and non-virtue, and that the fruit arises from the maturation of those habits. As it says in the Commentary on Entering the Middle Way: "In beginningless samsara, the habits of things are established, fully matured, and manifest in things." And there are many other such instances. If so, it is unreasonable to have no basis for establishing habits, so what is that basis? Just as those who accept the Alaya consciousness consider the Alaya consciousness, which is the object of the afflicted mind's clinging to "I," to be the place of habits, so too, this system considers the object of the co-emergent mind that merely clings to "I" to be the basis for the arising of habits. If so, how is it that the Commentary on Entering the Middle Way says that "the continuum of mind is the basis of habits"? Because the mere thought of "I" is a continuum imputed in dependence on the mind consciousness, it can also be called "the continuum of mind." Just as the similar kind of mind itself is called "its continuum," so too, it sometimes becomes the basis for the arising of habits. The nature of the habits of ignorance is as it says in the Commentary on Entering the Middle Way: "That which defiles and produces the continuum of mind, and follows after it, is habit, the culmination of afflictions, familiarity, root, and habit are different names."
