Then, within the tenets of the Madhyamaka school, is it also accepted that there are two types of self-grasping of phenomena, afflicted and non-afflicted? Although there is no clear explanation on this point, those Svatantrikas believe that when practicing the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers in this way, manifest self-grasping of phenomena can be temporarily abandoned. However, without the aid of accumulating limitless merit, the seeds of either type of self-grasping of phenomena cannot be abandoned. Therefore, it must be said that Hearers and Solitary Realizers can temporarily abandon manifest obscurations to knowledge, but it is impossible to abandon the seeds. This teacher's view is that self-grasping of phenomena is an affliction, so abandoning its seeds does not require the aid of accumulating limitless merit. However, to purify the obscurations to knowledge caused by the imprints of dualistic appearance delusion, it is believed that purification is not possible without such aid. If one understands what was said earlier, one will see that the difference is very large, which is why it is explained in this way. Second, in the school that asserts that phenomena lack inherent existence, even if one does not accept the alaya-consciousness and so on, how can the relationship of karma and result be established? Regarding virtuous and non-virtuous actions, even if a long time elapses between the action and its result, the arising of results such as happiness and suffering is accepted by all schools, both higher and lower, within our own tradition. If the action remains until before the result arises, it would become permanent. Since permanent things cannot perform a function, the relationship between the action and the arising of the result would not be established. If the action ceases in the second moment after it is performed, then from that point until before the actual result arises, the action does not exist. Moreover, since the ceased action does not exist as a thing, how can the action produce the result? In response to this question, some, in order to establish the power of the action, posit the alaya-consciousness, believing that when the action tends to cease in the second moment after it is performed, it is necessary to posit the alaya-consciousness. Others believe that there exists something different from the two actions, like a debt certificate, an imperishable non-associated compositional factor. Some believe that there exists a non-associated compositional factor of attainment that is different from the two actions. Some believe that it is necessary to posit a stream of consciousness imbued with the imprints of the action. Therefore, the action ceases
