The mere falsity like a face is understood by all worldly elders who do not turn their minds to any of the arguments that demonstrate emptiness. Therefore, it is unreasonable to consider such an understanding as a crude knowledge. If that were the case, although the image known as false would be established, the falsity established by the Madhyamikas would not be established. So how could the former become an example for the latter? Because here, the image and so on are cited as examples, it is citing an example that has already been established by worldly people, not citing something that has already been established as false by the Madhyamikas. That is to say, for an image that appears as a face, it is impossible to completely distinguish on the basis of appearance, this part appears as a face, and this part does not appear as a face. Although any part of the face that appears is empty as it appears, it is not contradictory to arise depending on its own causes. Taking this as an example, similarly, when blue appears to be established by its own characteristics, on the basis of blue, the parts that appear and do not appear to be established by nature are inseparable. This appearance is also such that any part that appears is empty as it appears, but it is not contradictory to generate its own cause and to generate its own result. This is what is to be argued. If one can understand that for the image of a face, even if any part that appears there does not exist as it appears, it will not become without an image, then for blue, even in the part that appears to be established by its own characteristics, any part that appears does not exist as it appears, one can certainly determine that blue exists. If one distinguishes with subtle wisdom the two forms of this negation and this non-negation from the example of the image on form and so on, it is indispensable for obtaining the Madhyamika view, so one should not be easily satisfied. Therefore, the commentary also says that the establishment of the cause and effect of the image without self-nature is also, which wise person would fixate on form and feeling, etc., which exist without difference from cause and effect, as merely existing, thereby determining that they have self-nature? Therefore, even if one fixates on existence, it does not arise by self-nature. That is to say, it is merely existence, not existence by self-nature.

Furthermore, previously it was shown that there is birth, but here it is shown that there is no birth by its own nature. Therefore, the two, birth and birth by its own nature, are very clearly distinguished. If these are not distinguished, then as long as a thing exists, it exists by its own essence; and once it does not exist by its own essence, it completely disappears, and thus cannot transcend the two extremes of imputation and denigration. In the commentary on the *Śataśāstra* it says: "According to those who assert that things exist, as long as that thing exists, it is indeed its own essence. When it is separated from its own essence, then for it, that thing does not exist in any way, like the horns of a donkey, therefore it cannot transcend dualism. All the manifest desires here will be difficult to reconcile." Therefore, because it does not exist by its own essence, it is freed from all extremes of existence; and because it itself has no inherent nature, it is able to establish cause and effect, thereby freeing itself from all extremes of non-existence. This seems to be a characteristic of the way in which the masters Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti explained the intention of the noble ones. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish between the two existences and the two non-existences. To establish this with the example of an image: In the *Sūtra of the Meeting of Father and Son* it says: "In a very pure mirror, just as an image without inherent nature appears, so understand that trees and all phenomena are like that." Therefore, the way to connect the meaning of other false examples should also be understood as before. The fifth has two aspects: the quality of easily abandoning the views of permanence and annihilation, and the quality of the very reasonable connection of cause and effect. The first is: Because of the above, all things are like images, and because they are empty due to existing by their own nature, therefore, in the ultimate truth and the conventional truth, or in both, they are not established by their own nature. Therefore, these forms and so on are not permanent because they are established by their own nature, and moreover, they are not annihilation, because annihilation is like the annihilation that is spoken of in the case where the seed does not perish at the time of the sprout. As it says in the *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā*: "To say that what existed before does not exist now, therefore it would follow that it is annihilation." If one accepts that things are established by their own nature, then if one thinks that a thing that existed before does not exist later, or that destruction is impermanent, it would also become a view of annihilation, because things exist by their own nature.
