If, through seeking and analysis, the establishment of conventional truth is prevented, then it would become truly existent, and forms, etc., would not become conventional truth, because it is not admitted that forms, etc., are established in ultimate truth, but are merely designated as conventional truth. Moreover, this is not said to those who assert substantial entities, so it is very clear that this is the Svātantrika-Madhyamaka school. Here, some teachers think that the verses of the noble one, such as, "Not born from myself, not born from others," etc., which negate birth, etc., are negating the birth, etc., of the imputed nature where the grasper and grasped are different entities, but not negating the dependent nature's truth. This view cannot be established without a reason for interpreting it that way. Therefore, those who say such things should only be refuted and examined. The proponents of the previous view are said by some earlier scholars to be teachers like Lodrö Ten, but such a statement is not found in their texts. In the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, the teacher Dharmapāla explains the view of the Four Hundred Verses as Mind-Only, so it would be appropriate to combine it with that. So, how do those who interpret the meaning of the profound sūtras as Mind-Only interpret the meaning of the noble ones' texts? In the texts of great teachers like Vasubandhu, it is not clearly stated that Nāgārjuna's texts are interpreted in this way. However, in the Explanation of Reasoning, etc., it seems that they rely on the sūtras of definitive meaning to explain the Perfection of Wisdom Sūtras as provisional meaning. Therefore, it seems that they also interpret it in that way, because it is impossible to deny the noble ones' texts. If one interprets according to the literal meaning, one would not fail to interpret the Perfection of Wisdom Sūtras according to the literal meaning. If one interprets the literal meaning as provisional meaning, then one must interpret its meaning as Mind-Only. However, all phenomena are not established in ultimate truth, and what is said to be not established by their own characteristics, etc., can be established by reasoning just as it is in the literal meaning. Therefore, because it does not harm the literal meaning, considering that it cannot be interpreted as definitive meaning, it is said, "Only refute and examine." This means that it shows countless ways to refute the opposite of the literal meaning and to establish the direct meaning, which is to prove that the meaning of the texts cannot be guided in other ways, so here it is only briefly stated.

Sakya Pandita said: If birth established by its own nature does not exist in either of the two truths, then forms and so on would also not exist. If this were the case, the nature of forms and so on would not become the object of perception for eye consciousness and so on in the world. If this were not the case, then rabbit horns and so on should also appear to eye consciousness and so on, because all reasons are the same. The answer to this is: Empty things, that is, false images and so on, as well as sounds and so on, depend on the assembly of causes and conditions such as mirrors, faces, caves, and sound production, and their arising is not unknown in the world, but is known. Just as it is known in the world, from empty, that is, false images and so on, eye consciousness and so on will arise with the appearance of those images and so on. Similarly, just as from false images arises consciousness with a false appearance, even if all things are empty of being established by their own nature, empty fruits will arise from empty causes. Here it is said that from images will arise the eye consciousness that grasps them. Images are real things, and since they are different in nature from consciousness, they are external objects, and they are also the objective condition of eye consciousness, so they are considered to be the source of form. The same should be understood for the appearance of double moons, tangled hair, illusions, and so on, as well as sounds and so on. Thus, the face, double moons, tangled hair, and so on that appear to the confused sense consciousness are similar to things established by their own nature that appear to the five consciousnesses without immediate harm to the senses. Faces and so on are impossible, but they appear there, which is similar to the fact that being established by their own nature is impossible, but it appears there. Images and sounds and so on are similar to forms and sounds and so on. Therefore, even if one does not admit that the five forms and so on exist externally by their own nature, one admits that the forms and so on that appear there exist externally. Similarly, even if one does not admit that images and so on are faces and so on existing externally, one admits that images and so on exist externally, and the admission and non-admission of these two in the external world are the same. Images.
