Refuting the assertion that you hold to be established, and, in that way, refuting arguments against such refutation. The first part has three points: Refuting because the samadhi of the noble ones would lead to the destruction of things; refuting because conventional truth cannot withstand rational analysis; refuting because the ultimate birth is not obstructed. The first point is: As it is said, "No phenomena arise by their own nature," this must undoubtedly be accepted. It is reasonable to say that this point must be accepted, but one should not say the opposite, that this view cannot be accepted. If it were not so, if the characteristics of form, feeling, etc., that is, the nature established by its own essence, were to arise dependent on causes and conditions, then when a yogi directly realizes the emptiness of phenomena as being established by their own nature, they would realize emptiness by denying the nature of things. Because samadhi requires not focusing on form, etc., and if these were established by their own characteristics, then samadhi would have to focus on them, but it does not. At that time, those things would disappear. If they disappear, then those things would become a destruction, existing before samadhi but not existing later. Therefore, for such destruction, samadhi itself must become the cause. Just as a hammer, etc., is the cause of the destruction of a vase, etc., if seeing emptiness also becomes the cause of the destruction and denial of the nature of things, that is also unreasonable. Therefore, the establishment of things by their own characteristics does not exist, so one should not accept arising by its own nature at any time. To this, the Madhyamikas who accept arising established by its own characteristics, because they think that being established by its own characteristics does not become truly established, if form, etc., were established by their own characteristics, then merely directly seeing reality would not require focusing on it. Although they say so, that alone cannot eliminate the fault that being established by reason is truly established, which has been said before and will be said again. Here, in the commentary, it says: In the Ratnakuta Sutra, Kashyapa, "Furthermore, for the Middle Way, all phenomena are also completely

Or, regarding conceptualizations, it is said, "Emptiness does not make phenomena empty, but phenomena themselves are emptiness." And quoting (scriptures) such as the absence of characteristics, the absence of aspirations, the absence of actions, the absence of arising, and the absence of ceasing, if phenomena have an inherent nature established by their own characteristics, then these phenomena have not become empty from their own side. Therefore, the statement "phenomena themselves are emptiness" is unreasonable. If the inherent existence of self-nature is not negated from its own side, then it must be shown to be empty through other means, which contradicts "emptiness does not make phenomena empty." Therefore, when the Middle Way distinguishes the self-nature of phenomena, it considers that phenomena are established by their own nature from their own side, and therefore it is shown to be empty. This sutra also refutes the Yogacara view that the dependent nature is established by its own characteristics and is not empty, and that it (the dependent nature) is empty because there is no difference in substance between the apprehended and the apprehender. The *Śataśāstra* says: "Not empty, not possessing emptiness, not seeing, Nirvana is mine, may perverse views not arise, thus spoke the Tathagatas." The *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā* also says: "The Buddhas have said that emptiness is to relinquish all views. Those who hold emptiness as a view are said to be incurable." These also explain the meaning of the previous sutra. The meaning of phenomena being empty by their own nature is also the same. If it is said that a pot is not empty by a pot, but empty by truth, this is the view of the other-emptiness school. If it is said that a pot is empty by a pot, this is the view of the self-emptiness school, which is completely unreasonable. If a pot is empty by a pot, then there should be no pot on the pot. If oneself does not exist in oneself, then it does not exist in any other, so the pot will completely not exist. At that time, all other things will also be the same, so the person who says this will also not exist, and the distinction of "this is empty, this is not empty" will be completely impossible. Some people think that this kind of emptiness is correct, while others think that it is annihilationist emptiness, both of which have deviated from the principle of dependent origination, which is free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation, as repeatedly explained by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In particular, if someone says that all conventional truths must be determined to be empty by themselves, and considers this to be annihilationist emptiness.
