To posit afflictive ignorance and the grasping of self and what belongs to self as being established by their own characteristics as the view of the perishable aggregate is inconsistent with the Vaibhashikas. According to the Vaibhashika system, as explained in the ninth chapter of the commentary on the Treasury, holding that the person exists as a substance capable of being independent is the self-grasping of the view of the perishable aggregate; holding that what belongs to self is the object of control of that substantially existent person is posited as the grasping of what belongs to self in the view of the perishable aggregate, which is very different. Holding that the person exists as a substance capable of being independent is something that even those whose minds have not been transformed by tenets may have, but holding that the person exists as something other than the aggregates and different in characteristics is something that those whose minds have not been transformed by tenets do not have. Thus, the view of grasping at extremes is also twofold. If, on the other hand, one asserts that the person and phenomena exist as being established by their own characteristics, how can such grasping be established as afflictive ignorance and self-grasping? The person and phenomena being established by their own nature will be refuted by the reasoning that refutes them. At that time, such grasping will be established as the grasping of truth, which is mistaken about the object of grasping. If that is established, then grasping the person and phenomena as being truly established will establish the two self-grasps. If these are established, then the grasping of truth will become the opposite of the knowledge of the meaning of suchness, and thus will be established as ignorance. Moreover, it can establish that the view of the perishable aggregate does not cease, and thus can be established as afflictive ignorance, so it is very important to know how to establish the unique classification of afflictions. The way in which other afflictions such as desire arise from the delusion of grasping at truth is as follows: The Four Hundred says: "As the body is free in the body, delusion turns in all." The commentary says: "Delusion is because of being confused about how these things are truly realized, so it is more likely to fabricate the true nature of things. Desires and so on are also because of delusion fabricating the nature of things, thus producing differences such as loveliness and unloveliness. Therefore, they become inseparable from delusion and also depend on delusion, because delusion is the main one."

If explained as stated, then words like "entering" indicate ignorance clinging to truth. The fact that attachment and so on do not enter separately from ignorance means that they enter in accordance with ignorance, not separately from it. The reason for this is that attachment and so on come from entering itself. To impose distinctions of likeable and dislikeable on objects is an unreasonable way of thinking, which is the cause of the arising of attachment and aversion, not a way of showing the clinging of attachment and aversion. Therefore, "what is imputed by ignorance alone" and so on, means that attachment and aversion arise based on the imputation of likeable and dislikeable on what is established by its own nature alone. The truly established, which is imputed by ignorance, is not shown as the object among the two aspects of attachment and so on, but the object of both aspects of the innate self-grasping is the basis of establishment, and since attachment and so on are also in accordance with ignorance, the objects are the same. The aspect of wanting and the aspect of turning away from what is not wanted, which are led by those two unreasonable ways of thinking, will become attachment and hatred. It is only the aspect of wanting and not wanting that is led by the person clinging to the self-existent reality. Because it is not established as attachment and hatred, the ways of establishing attachment and hatred are also different. The so-called dependence on ignorance also refers to the fact that attachment and so on are led out by the ignorance that clings to self-established characteristics. The analogy of the body and the body faculty is like the fact that for the other four faculties, the body faculty is established separately without dependence. All other afflictions also arise depending on ignorance, and arise without separating from it. Therefore, by destroying ignorance itself, all afflictions will be destroyed. Therefore, it is said that one should respect this antidote—the words of emptiness, the nature of dependent arising. This clinging to real things is also said in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness to be the fundamental ignorance of samsara. It is also said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: If any place is found, the cunning serpent of affliction will seize the mind of anyone, but those who have no place will not be seized. This is what is said about clinging to reality.
