Just as the stainless moonlight alleviates the suffering of beings, so too, the son of the Victorious Ones, the second bhumi, born from the moon, possesses the light of discipline that is free from the defilement of transgressions. This second bhumi, the stainless one, also lives up to its name, as it alleviates the mental suffering of beings caused by transgressions of discipline. This second bhumi does not belong to the realm of samsara, so it is not samsaric existence, but it is the glory of the world, because all perfect qualities follow after that Bodhisattva, and for the sake of sentient beings, due to the power of aspiration, it obtains the excellent cause of a universal monarch who rules over the four continents. This concludes the explanation of the second generation of Bodhicitta in the extensive commentary on the Madhyamakavatara, "Illuminating the Profound Meaning." The Third: Explaining the Third Bhumi, the Illuminating Bhumi, in four parts: the defining characteristic of the basis of distinction—the etymology of the bhumi; the distinguishing qualities—the qualities of the bhumi; the distinguishing qualities of the first three perfections; and concluding by stating the qualities of the bhumi. First: The Bodhisattva bhumi, this third one, is called the Illuminating Bhumi. Why is it called the Illuminating Bhumi? Because it is in accordance with the meaning of the name. At the time of attaining the third bhumi, the fire of wisdom that burns all the fuel of knowable objects, and the light of the nature that can pacify all the elaborations of dualistic appearance in equipoise, arises. Moreover, for the son of the Sugata who generates the third mind, at the time of that third bhumi, just as at the time when the sun is about to rise, the appearance of a copper mirror arises, so too, for this Bodhisattva, the appearance of wisdom arises. This is because in the subsequent attainment of that bhumi, the appearance of red or reddish-yellow light pervades everywhere. The Ratnavali also says: The third bhumi is the Illuminating One, because the light of wisdom and peace arises, because meditative absorption and direct perception arise, and because desire and hatred are completely exhausted. Therefore, as a result of its maturation, it especially practices patience and diligence. It is the powerful lord of the gods, the wise one, who can repel the desire for sensual pleasures. So it is said. The second has four parts: emphasizing patience on this bhumi, how to cultivate other forms of patience, and the distinctions of the perfection of patience.

ba. Here, other pure qualities that arise in this realm are further explained. Firstly, for the bodhisattva who has attained such a manifestation of wisdom, in order to particularly elucidate the perfection of patience, it is said, "If," and so on. The previously mentioned generosity and morality are superior here because they are present in abundance. Here, among the remaining eight perfections, patience is the superior one. The way it is superior is merely that the practice of the perfection of patience is exceptionally excellent. The remaining seven do not occur here. Moreover, the bodhisattva on the third ground, in order to protect the minds of others, and because they possess the peaceful wisdom described as "fuel for knowledge," is the basis for the universal torment of others. This bodhisattva does not manifest the actions of the three doors with doubts such as, "This one has harmed me and my relatives in the past, is doing so now, and will do so in the future." Therefore, it is specifically stated that it is not a place for anger. Even so, if some angry individuals were to cut flesh from the body of the bodhisattva, not just flesh but also bones, and not cutting off a very large piece at once, but bit by bit, not cutting continuously but stopping and stopping, not completing the cutting in a short time but cutting over a long period, even then, not only would they not generate anger towards the cutter, but for the bodhisattva who contemplates experiencing suffering such as hell, caused by that sin, more intensely than others of their kind, they would generate even greater patience towards the cutter. This is the way in which patience is superior. Therefore, although there are cases in the Joyful and other second grounds where the mind does not become disturbed when the body is cut, it is clear that superior patience does not arise. Thus, it should be understood that superior patience begins to arise from this ground onwards. Not only does superior patience arise by contemplating the superior suffering of hell and so on, but also because the bodhisattva who sees selflessness directly sees the three spheres of who is cutting, what is being cut, when, and how it is being cut on the body of the bodhisattva, like a reflection, and the conceptual thoughts of self and what belongs to self.
