It is because of this reason. Therefore, to achieve excellent higher realms and definite goodness, it is necessary to have a close connection with ethics. If ethics are abandoned, then it will never be accomplished. This is also recorded in the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis. Each of the ten non-virtuous actions, such as killing, is divided into large, medium, and small. Each of these leads to hell, animals, and hungry ghosts, respectively. Finally, if one is born as a human, killing leads to two results: short life and many illnesses. Each of the remaining nine non-virtuous actions also brings about two undesirable results. The ten virtuous actions, on the other hand, lead to rebirth in the desire realm gods and humans, all the way up to the peak of existence. Above that, if these ten virtuous actions are practiced with a fleeting mind focused only on one's own benefit, along with fear and aversion to samsara, without great compassion, and with the wisdom of realizing selflessness that follows the words of others, then one will attain liberation through the Hearer Vehicle. Above that, in the life of the last existence, not relying on others, focusing on the Bodhi of the Pratyekabuddha, without great compassion and skillful means, and by comprehending the suchness of profound dependent origination, one will attain liberation through the Solitary Realizer Vehicle. Above that, with extremely vast and immeasurable loving-kindness, and possessing compassion, gathered by skillful means, making great aspirations, not abandoning all sentient beings, and focusing on the Buddha's extremely vast wisdom, the Bodhisattva can be completely purified and can accomplish the vast practice of pure Paramitas. This is a summary of what was said. In the Suhrllekha (Friendly Letter), it is also said: You should guard the precepts that are neither damaged nor low, and maintain purity without mixture or defilement. Just as the earth is the basis for both moving and unmoving things, it is well said to be the root and foundation of all qualities. Therefore, it is very important to study ethics. Therefore, although this is said in the context of the second Bhumi, it should also be done by a beginner Bodhisattva. It is very important to maintain the ethics of vows, abstaining from even the motivation to commit the ten non-virtuous actions. From generosity, one obtains enjoyment, etc., until ethics.

There is no other way than discipline. As stated above, one must contemplate and study with wisdom that understands non-attachment to discipline. It is not enough to merely understand the literal meaning or to practice only a few times, so one must constantly contemplate these principles. If one is constantly accustomed, even upon first hearing about the conduct of a Bodhisattva, it will generate emotion in the mind. Even things that the Buddha could not do even with long periods of asceticism, one will naturally comprehend. As it is said in the "Praise of Infinite Qualities": Whatever is heard will have an impact on this world; even conduct that you yourself cannot practice with long periods of asceticism will, through habit, naturally change in time. Therefore, it is difficult to increase qualities if one is not completely familiar with them. Third, just as the great ocean, by the power of dragons and those with pure things, emits any taste outward in the form of steam, not coexisting with the taste. Auspicious abundance and "Ear-Black Woman," which is inauspicious, do not coexist. Similarly, a great being controlled by completely pure discipline, that is, a second-ground Bodhisattva, does not wish to dwell with those who break discipline. In the commentary on the "Four Hundred Verses," it says: In the house where the auspicious woman enters, the Ear-Black Woman will surely come uninvited. What is said here and what was said before are not contradictory, because there it refers to two people who have that name, while here "Ear-Black Woman" is the name of inauspiciousness. Fourth, if someone cannot prevent the seeds of true attachment to the three spheres of who abandons, what is abandoned, and to whom one abandons, then such discipline is called the worldly Paramita. If that discipline itself is empty of the true attachment to the three spheres mentioned earlier, that is, controlled by the uncontaminated wisdom that understands non-attachment, then it is the transcendental Paramita, so there are two divisions of discipline. Fifth, just like the autumn season's
