Other origination is also non-existent in conventional terms. Although cause and effect are conventionally considered to be distinct entities, this alone does not imply other-origination. As it is said in conventional terms, each dharma also holds two entities, and although there is an established entity, it is not like not accepting the entity of self-origination. In the Clear Words, the vow that things do not arise from themselves is explained as a negation of negation, which is similar to the other three vows. When establishing the absence of inherent existence, what is to be established is the negation that merely cuts off the object to be negated. As it is said in the Clear Words: "In this world, however many sounds there are, all are without things, nothing exists." Because actions and so forth arise, it is intended to express the negation of negation. The meaning of the absence of things is the meaning of the absence of inherent existence. As it is said. In the Self-Commentary, it is said that the four vows are stated in order to later state them and prove them through reasoning. As it is said, below, having made the refutation of the four extremes of origination as a reason, it is said that all things are devoid of inherent origination, and in the Clear Words also, after refuting the four extremes of origination, it is said: "Therefore, origination does not exist, this is what is to be established." Therefore, it is not that it is not admitted that things do not originate inherently. In the Clear Words, it is said: "Subsequent inferences are merely the result of refuting the vows of others." As it is said, the arguments merely refute the inherent existence that the opponent has vowed, and do not establish anything else besides that, but it is not that they refute the establishment of mere refutation. Similarly, we do not establish this as non-existent or existent, but rather we refute the existence that others have posited and the non-existence that has been posited, because we want to eliminate the two extremes and establish the Middle Way. As it is said, it is also merely cutting off the extreme of existence and the extreme of non-existence that the opponent has accepted, and does not establish anything else besides that. It is also not that merely refuting the two extremes is not established, because it has been said that the Middle Way is established by removing the two extremes. If it is not that there is no inherent establishment, then because there are no three aggregates, it is inherently existent, in the Refutation of Disputes it is said: "If, because of the very absence of inherent existence, what

Because it is clearly stated in the scriptures: "If self-nature is negated, then the negation of non-self-nature itself will completely establish self-nature." The reason why even admitting such a thesis and proof would not make one a Svatantrika is that it has already been explained in detail elsewhere, so I will not elaborate further. So, what are the definitions of the two types of negation? In general, negation is something that must be understood after the object to be negated is actually cut off by the mind. Like cutting off "non-self," merely cutting off the object to be negated on an object is not negation. Like the nature of phenomena and ultimate truth, even if the object to be negated is not actually cut off by words, if its meaning appears in the mind, then all those that appear in the form of cutting off elaboration are negations. Among them, prasajya-pratisedha (non-implicative negation) is when the mind actually cuts off the object to be negated and does not infer or establish another phenomenon. For example, when a Brahmin asks whether it is permissible to drink alcohol, the answer "I do not drink alcohol" is merely a complete cutting off of drinking alcohol, but it does not establish "I drink other beverages" or "I do not drink other beverages." paryudāsa-pratisedha (implicative negation) is when the mind cuts off the object to be negated and infers or establishes another phenomenon. For example, if one wants to show that a person is a Shudra (a member of the lowest caste), one says "This is not a Brahmin," which is not merely negating a Brahmin, but establishing that he is a Shudra who is inferior to a Brahmin in terms of learning and so on. There are three ways to infer another phenomenon: directly, indirectly, and according to the situation. The first is like "Selflessness exists," where both cutting off the object to be negated and inferring another phenomenon are established with one word. The second is like "The sacrificer does not eat black food during the day," which is expressed through meaning. These two cases are each a direct and indirect inference. A case that has both is like "The sacrificer does not eat black food during the day, there exists one who is not emaciated." The third is when it is certain that a person is either a Kshatriya or a Brahmin, but it is not certain which one, and one says "This is not a Brahmin," which is not expressed by one's own words. As quoted in the commentary on the Lamp of Wisdom: "Negation is expressed by meaning, one word establishes, possessing these, not expressing one's own words, not other, other is." Some say that if it is combined with establishing a basis, it is not prasajya-pratisedha, which is not
