Because there are limitless phenomena. The two kinds of self-grasping are also identified on one's own continuum, and the basis of what one is confused about must be determined as not existing as it is grasped. If it is not like that, refuting and establishing by looking outwards is like searching for traces on the grass after a thief has fled into the forest, and will not hit the point. If the grasping of truth is well identified in this way, it will be known that there are many cognitions that are not the two self-graspings. Therefore, all the wrong cognitions that want to be prevented by the reasoning that examines the thusness of all the objects grasped by the cognitions will disappear. Although there are many things that need to be explained starting from these, some have already been explained in many other places, and some will be explained below, so I will not elaborate here. The second has two parts: establishing the selflessness of phenomena with reasoning, and establishing the selflessness of persons with reasoning. The first has four parts: refuting the four extremes of arising in both truths, refuting disputes after such refutation, how the arising of dependent origination itself prevents the wrong cognitions of grasping extremes, and identifying the result of having investigated with reasoning. The first has three parts: making a commitment to no arising by nature, showing the proof that establishes it with reasoning, and the meaning established by refuting the four extremes of arising. The first is: among the ten samenesses mentioned earlier, because only the sameness of no arising by nature is shown by reasoning, it is thought that it is easy to show the other samenesses of phenomena, so the noble one said at the beginning of the Treatise on the Middle Way: “Not from myself, nor from another, nor from both, nor without cause, whatever things, wherever, there is never any arising.” Thus, it is briefly arranged. “Never” and “at another time” are synonyms. The word “wherever” is a synonym for the word “somewhere,” showing the basis of non-arising, and the word as a basis explains the place, time, and tenets. Among the three bases, what does not arise? The word as a basis with the word “what” expresses the external and internal things. Therefore, the meaning of the verses “Not from myself” etc. is: external and internal things, in any place, time, and tenets, cannot arise from myself. It should be explained by combining it like this. Similarly, things

It is impossible for these things to arise from others, from both, and from no cause. The other three commitments also apply in the same way. In the Clear Words, it is good to translate "from myself, what things" in this way. Would one think that, due to the region, saffron does not grow in some places; due to the time, crops do not grow at some times? "Wherever and whenever" has prevented this thought, so saying "never" is not meaningless. Although it does not arise from the perspective of the Madhyamaka school, does it arise from the perspective of the school that asserts the existence of things? "Whichever school" has prevented this thought, so it does not show that it does not arise in the view that asserts the existence of things. In the self-commentary, it says, "Here, the 'non-' is related to the proof of existence itself, that is, arising from oneself. It is related to existence and non-existence, because negating it actually establishes it." The meaning of what is said is that, instead of separating the last two lines as the commitment and the first two lines as the reason, one should connect them and say, "Arising from myself is non-existent," and the other three should also be connected in the same way. If self-nature arises, one must admit any of the four kinds of arising as its proof, so it is said "proof of existence." If the four kinds of arising are negated, then the arising of self-nature is also negated, so connecting in this way will not have the fault of not establishing the arising of self-nature, which is the meaning of the last sentence. Therefore, unlike what is said in the Light on the Middle Way, it is not permissible to take the negation of the four kinds of arising as the reason to prove that the arising of self-nature is non-existent, but rather it is said that separating them as before is not the meaning of that treatise. It is impossible for things to arise from others at any edge of region, time, or school. Connect in this way, and in the Clear Words it is also said, "Merely by these conditions, one admits that conventional truth is established, but not through admitting the four directions, because that would become asserting that things have self-nature." Therefore, other-arising is not a term of scripture, but a term of sectarianists, and it is said considering the other established by its own characteristics. If one admits this, it will become asserting that it has self-nature. For this system,
