Regarding innate view of self, it is fundamentally prohibited to take the aggregates as the object of focus, but through explanation, it is said to take the imputed self as the object of focus. Therefore, one should take as the object of focus only the "I" that arises from the mere thought of "I am," and only the person. As for the aspect, as it says in the auto-commentary: "The one who grasps at self, thinking that there is a self that does not exist, and clinging to it as truly manifest here." Therefore, it is grasping that the self is truly established. Furthermore, the auto-commentary says: "Therein, the view of the aggregates is the wisdom with defilements that enters into the aspect of such thoughts as 'I' and 'mine'." As it is said, the object of focus of the innate view of self must be the wisdom that naturally gives rise to the thought of "I am." Therefore, although the innate grasping of self of a person who grasps at the self-nature of another's continuum is innate, it is not an innate view of self. The phrase "enters into the aspect of the thought of 'I' and 'mine'" does not mean that it shows only "I" and "mine" as the object of the way of grasping, but it shows that the two have the aspect of grasping at self-nature. The object of focus of the innate view of self that grasps at "mine" is only "mine," and one's own eyes, etc., are not taken as the object of focus. The aspect is that, focusing on that object of focus, one grasps that "mine" is established by its own nature. Then, in the auto-commentary "This is mine," it says: "'This is mine,' thus clinging to all aspects of things other than the object of grasping at self." How is it that, based on the eyes, etc., clinging to "This is mine" is explained as grasping at "mine"? This means that the eyes, etc., are seen as "mine," and it is the meaning of clinging to "mine" as truly manifest, and it does not show the nature of "mine," the eyes, etc., as the object of focus. If it were not so, then the view of self and the grasping of self of phenomena would not be contradictory. The object of focus of the innate grasping of self of phenomena is the form aggregates, etc., of one's own and others' continuums, as well as the eyes, ears, etc., and the objects, etc., that are not included in the continuum. The aspect is as previously explained. Thus, grasping at the two selves is the ignorance that binds one to samsara, as it says in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness: Things born from causes and conditions, also

Where is the discrimination? The Buddha said that is ignorance. From that, the twelve branches arise. Thus, clinging to things of dharma as truly existent is said to be the root ignorance of samsara. From the self-grasping of dharma arises the ignorance of self-grasping of persons, and from that, it is said that the twelve branches arise. In order to reverse that ignorance, it is necessary to see the emptiness of what it grasps, and the selflessness of what it grasps. As it is said in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness: Because of seeing correctly that things are empty, Knowing well that ignorance does not arise, That is the cessation of ignorance, Therefore the twelve branches cease. And as it is said in the Praise of Dharmadhatu: By grasping "I" and "mine," As long as outward discriminations are made, When the two aspects of selflessness are seen, The seed of existence will cease. And: The supreme mind is that which tames, The nature of dharma is without nature. And as it is said in the Four Hundred: If one sees selflessness in objects, The seed of existence will cease. And: Therefore, all afflictions, Are destroyed by destroying delusion. If one sees dependent arising, Delusion will not arise. Therefore, with all effort here, That very statement should be declared. The delusion spoken of in this way is the occasion of identifying delusion as one of the three poisons, and is therefore afflicted ignorance. In order to reverse that ignorance, it is necessary to realize the meaning of profound dependent arising, which appears as emptiness in the sense of dependent arising. The commentator also said: The yogi prevents the self, Thus, by refuting the object of self-grasping, it is necessary to realize selflessness. Therefore, if the object of self-grasping is not refuted, but only the mind is withdrawn from the object, it cannot be established as having entered into selflessness. The reason for this is that when the mind engages with an object, there are three ways of grasping: grasping the object as true, grasping it as untrue, and grasping it without distinguishing between the two. Just as one does not necessarily grasp something as true even if one does not grasp it as untrue, one does not necessarily enter into the two selflessnesses even if one does not enter into the two selves; the mind abides in the third aggregate.
