If one sees suffering in something that has done no benefit or harm, one mostly ignores it, and this is because one does not like it. If one sees the suffering of a relative, one cannot bear it, and the more one likes them, the more unbearable their suffering seems. Therefore, it is very important to generate a beloved being who is very dear and cherished. Regarding how to generate affection, there appear to be two systems of the wise. The first is: Chandrakirti, in his commentary on the Four Hundred, says that if one thinks that sentient beings have been relatives such as parents from beginningless time, then one can endure jumping into samsara in order to liberate them. The great Chandragomin and the wise Kamalashila also said this. The second view is that of the glorious Shantideva, which can be understood from other explanations. In this way, by cherishing sentient beings and by the manner of suffering in samsara, those who strive to cultivate great compassion make meaningful the unique praise made by Chandrakirti. If it is not like that, then those who boast of being wise are like parrots reciting, and it should be understood in the same way in other situations as well. The way to approach compassion focused on sentient beings will be explained. Secondly, for compassion focused on phenomena and compassion focused on the unapprehendable, the word 'approach' is mentioned twice in order to clarify through the aspect of the object. Seeing beings moving like the moon in water stirred by the wind, that is, perishing in an instant, and having compassion for them, I bow to that compassion. This is connected to compassion focused on phenomena. Similarly, seeing beings like the reflection of the moon in water, although appearing to be established by their own nature, but seeing them as empty, and having compassion for them, I bow to that compassion. This is connected to compassion focused on the unapprehendable. In the commentary, it says, 'Having established 'beings,' I bow to that compassion,' which is referring to the fact that the latter two objects have the word 'beings.' In this way, the water is very clear and the wind is not very strong, and the part of the water is covered with moisture, and in it the image of the moon...

Furthermore, in the image, together with the water, which is the object of reliance previously focused on, each moment of destruction arises as if the actual substance of the moon itself is manifestly focused upon. When this happens, the noble ones, that is, those skilled in this way, see each moment as impermanent and the nature of the moon that appears as emptiness. Similarly, bodhisattvas who have become empowered by compassion also see sentient beings falling into the ocean of destructive views, with the vast blue water of ignorance flowing in to increase it, dwelling within the winds of inappropriate conceptual thoughts, and appearing before them like reflections of their own black and white karmas, like the moon in the sky. When they see the suffering of compounded destruction descending upon them moment by moment, and emptiness as established by nature, great compassion arises from focusing on them. This arises from contemplating the pleasing nature of sentient beings and their wandering in samsara, as previously explained. Although destructive views are ignorance, the separate explanation of ignorance from them refers to the ignorance of self-grasping of the Dharma, which is guided by destructive views. Here, in the commentary, the three types of compassion are not distinguished by their aspects, but by their objects. Therefore, the aspect of all three is the desire to separate sentient beings from suffering. Focusing on sentient beings is also the same. In the case of the first compassion, it is said to have compassion for beings, and in the case of the latter two, it is also said that beings are shaken, thus showing that sentient beings are the focus. Therefore, the compassion that focuses on Dharma does not focus on sentient beings alone, but on sentient beings that are destroyed in an instant. Therefore, it focuses on sentient beings that are distinguished by momentary impermanence. When it is certain that sentient beings are destroyed in an instant, the existence of a permanent, singular, and independent sentient being is prevented in that mind. Therefore, it can prevent the non-existence of sentient beings whose essence is different from the aggregates. At that time, since it is understood that sentient beings are merely imputed upon the collection of aggregates, it focuses on sentient beings who are merely imputed upon the Dharma of the aggregates, etc. Therefore, it is said to focus on Dharma. The term "impermanent sentient being" is merely an example, not a self-sufficient substance.
