So, is the non-self of phenomena fully taught? In the paths of those two, is the non-self of phenomena fully meditated upon? What is the meaning of what this teacher has said, I wonder? That is, the Mahāyāna practitioners realize that all knowable things are without inherent existence, while the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have this realization, they realize that some of the same knowable things are without inherent existence. This is definitely not the case, because on a basis that has been established, if the non-self of phenomena is established by valid cognition, then when analyzing whether other bases exist truthfully, one can realize their non-truthfulness based on the previous reasoning. Some who consider themselves Madhyamikas take the refutation of the true establishment of things as a method, and consider true emptiness to be truly established; some consider the self-established nature of phenomena to be truly established. The former seems to have the fault of not grasping the measure of truth well, and only roughly refuting it, while the latter, although claiming to have refuted the truth of things, is not refuted by valid cognition, but remains in the view of defaming things. Therefore, they are uncertain. Therefore, for Mahāyāna practitioners, as stated in the Root Wisdom, even when establishing the non-truth of a single basis, it is established by endless different reasons for establishment. Therefore, for that suchness, wisdom will become very vast; for Hīnayāna practitioners, if that suchness is established by valid cognition with a concise reason, it will not be done like the former. Therefore, for that suchness, wisdom will not be vast, so it is said to be vast or concise, and whether the meditation on non-self is complete or not. The reason why this happens is also because the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas strive to abandon only afflictions, and for them, it is enough to realize the concise meaning of that suchness. Mahāyāna practitioners are committed to abandoning the obscurations to knowledge, therefore, for them, wisdom needs to grow in that suchness, so that wisdom becomes very vast. The second point is, so in the Ornament for Clear Realization it says: "In order to abandon the conceptualization of the object of grasping, and in order not to abandon the grasper, one should know that the path like the coral of a support is truly concise." That is, the self-born path, although it can abandon the conceptualization of clinging to the truth of the object of grasping, cannot abandon the clinging to the truth of the grasper, and it also says: "In order to learn about the decline of the three: afflictions, knowable things, and the path."

As in "lotus and mustard seed, and the purity of the bodhisattvas," how should it be understood that attachment to the apprehended is said to be a cognitive obscuration? In this regard, the meaning of abandoning attachment to external objects is: even if external objects are established by valid cognition, the real existence of external objects is refuted by reason, like the Madhyamikas, by ascertaining this meaning and practicing, thereby abandoning real attachment; or, like the Cittamātrins, external objects are negated by reason, relying on practicing this meaning, thereby abandoning the belief in the existence of external objects, and it does not go beyond these two situations. Among them, if it is the first situation, then it is not reasonable, because external objects can generally be established as existing, and if they are truly existent, then they are refuted by the reason that examines ultimate reality, then from then on, when examining whether the apprehended is truly existent or not, relying on the power of the previous reason, it is possible to realize non-true existence, as Āryadeva said: "Whoever sees one thing, as it is in its suchness, also sees all things, as they are in their suchness." Therefore. If it is believed to be like the second situation, it is the view of commentators such as Acarya Simhabhadra, according to their view, the non-existence of external objects is established by valid cognition. If the non-existence of external objects is established, then the consciousness that grasps it, and the apprehended are not different in substance, even someone with dull faculties can establish this. Therefore, not abandoning the real attachment to the apprehended is generally done by acknowledging that consciousness is truly established, and not by partially negating and partially believing that the apprehended and the apprehender are different in substance. Therefore, it is laughable that the Svātantrika, who says that the apprehended is truly existent, and the Cittamātra, who says that the consciousness of non-duality of the apprehended and the apprehender is established in ultimate reality, have the same tenets, this is the ridicule of the clarifier. Here, when showing the path of the Svātantrika as the middle vehicle, the difference between abandoning and not abandoning real attachment to the apprehended and the apprehender is explained, because these two are superior to the Śrāvakayāna and inferior to the Mahāyāna, so it is the middle. These are the three types of individuals of the great, middle, and small vehicles, with sharp, medium, and dull faculties. Relative to selflessness, the order of faculties is established, that is, the view of the Mahāyāna is the superior Madhyamaka view, the view of the middle vehicle is the medium Cittamātra view, and the view of the small vehicle is the inferior common personal selflessness view, although it is established in this way, it is not necessarily so. Because all three views exist in ultimate reality.
