This is the question asked here. The answer to that is: Manjushri, whoever sees that all conditioned phenomena (Sanskrit: saṃskāra) are unborn, that person has fully understood suffering. Whoever sees that all dharmas are without arising, that person has abandoned the origin (Sanskrit: samudaya). Whoever sees that all dharmas have completely passed beyond sorrow, that person has realized cessation (Sanskrit: nirodha). Whoever sees that all dharmas are utterly unborn, that person has cultivated the path (Sanskrit: mārga). Having said this, it is said that by that path, one passes beyond sorrow without grasping. This means that whoever sees that the four noble truths (Sanskrit: catvāri āryasatyāni) are without inherent existence, that person is liberated from samsara. If one does not depart from the path of clinging to truth, one will not transcend samsara, which is stated very clearly. Therefore, it is shown that the path of the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence, cannot abandon the seeds of affliction, and that to abandon them, one must realize the meaning of reality and then meditate. If these are not well distinguished, one might assume that the Shravakas only meditate on the sixteen aspects such as impermanence to abandon afflictions. In that case, one would not be able to distinguish the stages of Shravaka Arya and Shravaka Arhat. Thus, one would accumulate the great sin of slandering the Aryas. If someone who speaks like that has the Bodhisattva vows, they would also generate a root downfall. Because in the Compendium of Trainings (Śikṣāsamuccaya) it says: "With the vehicle of learning, clinging to attachment and so on, one does not become abandoned, and one also causes others to cling." Therefore, it is said to be a root downfall. This meaning is also clearly stated in the Diamond Sutra. Subhuti, what do you think? Does a stream-enterer think, 'I have attained the fruit of stream-entry'? Subhuti replied: "World Honored One, it is not so. Why is that? World Honored One, it is because there is no entering into anything, therefore it is called stream-enterer." And, "World Honored One, if a stream-enterer were to think, 'I have attained the fruit of stream-entry,' that very person would be grasping at self. They would be grasping at sentient beings, grasping at life, and grasping at person." Thus it was said, and the same was said for the latter three fruitions. The stage of stream-entry is attained.

Furthermore, if one clings to the fruit to be attained, thinking, "I have attained the stream-entry fruit," then one will cling to that fruit itself. This passage explains that both the real clinging to persons and fruits are self-grasping. The first is the self-grasping of persons, and the second is the self-grasping of phenomena. If a stream-enterer does not cling, not thinking, "I have attained the fruit," it is because the object of real clinging has been refuted, but it does not mean that even the innate clinging is absent. Therefore, the later fruits should also be understood. Although some Svatantrika Madhyamikas explain this scripture differently, it is good as cited by Sher Jung Lodro (a Tibetan name), using it as an argument that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas must realize emptiness to enter Bodhi. Thus, these scriptures clearly show that if one is separated from the view of Suchness, one cannot be liberated from Samsara, and to be liberated from Samsara, one must have this view. That Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats are not liberated from the bonds of Samsara is not accepted or approved by any wise person. Therefore, the scriptures clearly show that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have the wisdom to realize that phenomena are without inherent existence. In addition, there are many scriptures such as the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra that can be used as evidence, but because there are too many words, they are not written. Secondly, in the "Precious Garland" it says: "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be self-grasping. If there is self-grasping, there will be karma, and from this, there will be rebirth. The three paths are without beginning or end, the center of Samsara is like a fire wheel, like a fire wheel, interdependent, this is Samsara. Because it cannot be obtained in oneself, others, and the three times, self-grasping will cease, and from this, karma and rebirth will also cease." The first two lines of this show that as long as there is real clinging to the aggregates, the view of the perishing aggregate of self-grasping will arise from this. Therefore, in order to completely eliminate the view of the perishing aggregate, one must eliminate the real clinging to the aggregates. From this, it can be known that Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats have also eliminated the real clinging to the aggregates. In this way, before the object of clinging of real clinging is refuted, the object of clinging of the view of the perishing aggregate will not disappear. Therefore, the selflessness of persons commonly acknowledged by the proponents of both the Great and Small Vehicles is the gross selflessness of persons.
