Just as there is no elephant, showing that there is also no object-possessing consciousness, it must be considered that this is showing that there is no self-established consciousness. As mentioned before, the Mind-Only school admits that the dependent arising that does not have an external object is because the dependent arising is self-established. Use these refutations to summarize the meaning. In short, just as there is no knowable object, there is also no mind. In the commentary, it is clearly stated that the mind with the appearance of a knowable object should also be understood as not being born from its own self-nature. Furthermore, in both the root text and the commentary, when refuting this kind of view, there are many examples of adding distinctions to the object to be refuted. Moreover, why did the great lord say that the mind is produced from ignorance and action? Because it is said that ignorance produces action, and action produces consciousness, this is also his own view. Therefore, for those who proclaim this view of no consciousness, there is no place for doubt for intelligent people. Therefore, for the knowable object and consciousness, all the practices of equating existence and non-existence should be understood from the perspective of the distinction of the object to be refuted. If the consciousness in a dream is not inverted, then wouldn't the experience in the dream not be remembered later when awake? This is not an argument that consciousness does not exist at all because the self-nature of consciousness is not established. Such an argument is also unreasonable. If one can recall the experience in a dream when awake, then if the mind in the dream exists as self-established, the external objects such as elephants in the dream should also exist like the mind. Why? Just as you think that the mind exists because you have the memory of "I saw it in a dream" when you are awake, in the dream, because you have the experience of "I saw this object," the external object also has such a memory. Therefore, either the object also exists, or it must be admitted that consciousness does not exist either. Then, the memory of the object and the object-possessor in the dream also exists in your own school, so how should these two be treated as existing or non-existing? Here, the commentary speaks of two kinds of memories: the memory of the experience in the dream and the memory of the experience of the object in the dream. Therefore, when elephants and other things appear in a dream,

For example, when seeing the image of a face, although it is not the eye consciousness that manifests that image experiencing the face, just as there is a sense of object experience dependent on the image. In a dream, even if there is no object experience of experiencing an elephant, because there is an object experience of what appears there, saying that one remembers the object is also remembering the experienced object. Distinguishing between objective experiences is not necessary for many similar situations, except for occasional cases. In this way, it is not possible to establish that the other-powered nature, which is empty of external objects, is established by its own nature. Because a real example is also impossible, just as one wants to establish that there are past and future lives, although there is no real example, but just as one establishes it with other combinations, there is no such example here either. Therefore, one should know that refuting the Mind-Only school is a very powerful reasoning. The second point is, if forms such as elephants exist in dreams, then the eye consciousness that grasps them should also exist in dreams, but this is unreasonable. Because when one is asleep, disturbed by sleep, eye consciousness is impossible. Therefore, forms such as elephants are not to be grasped by the eye sense base, only mind consciousness exists. Therefore, the sense base of external form does not exist.

Just as the three, form, and mind, are combined, so too in dreams, when completely taking an object, one mentally focuses on the combination of the three. Just as in that dream there is no eye and no object of the eye, form, so too the mind born from the two, the consciousness of the eye, does not exist either. Therefore, all three of the eye, form, and mind in a dream are false. Like the three, the remaining three of the eye's three, such as the ear, are also without inherent birth. Here, the word 'etc.' includes from sound and ear consciousness to mind and the realm of phenomena and mind consciousness. The four from the ear faculty to the body faculty, the four from sound to the arising of touch, and the four such as ear consciousness, as explained earlier for the eye's three, are false because, although they do not exist in dreams, they appear in their manner. The mind's three, although present in dreams, are false because they appear there as if they exist, even though they are inherently non-existent. Therefore, to assert that sense consciousness exists in dreams, and to refute it according to this teacher's view, is a very crude application of intelligence. Like the saying, 'The opponent's dawn has not yet arrived, but the sun of refutation has already risen,' it should be discarded far away. For some who claim to be Tibetan scholars, this kind of view is that of a wise great being. Without understanding the rough views of those who know, taking them as fields for continuously accumulating non-merit, it seems that many sentient beings are being placed in non-merit, so be careful. Here, when the Mind-Only school establishes its own system as stated in 'If in sleep,' etc., the teacher Legden also responds with an unestablished example: 'The form broken in the dharma realm is something to be taken by mind consciousness. Because it exists in dreams, consciousness does not exist anywhere without an object.' This is also unreasonable, because in dreams, the three in all ways are impossible. If one admits this in order to refute other schools, then at that time the example of the dream will become meaningless, because it has a non-false meaning.
