I am thus. It is evident that birth is empty of birth, but actions are not in vain. Thus it is said that in the intermediate state of existence, one experiences the fruits of previous actions, both happiness and suffering. The stream of consciousness that experiences this arises from the first moment of consciousness at birth. Death, transference, and birth exist nominally, but not ultimately, and the reason for this is emptiness of inherent existence. This is adding a qualification to what is to be negated, namely that the final consciousness, etc., are each empty in themselves. Having taught in this way, lest it be thought that there are no karmic results, it is said that actions are not in vain. The third has two aspects: refuting the argument that maturation is endless, and refuting the argument that it contradicts the scriptures that state that the alaya exists. The first is: if actions are not inherently produced, and because there is no inherent exhaustion, it is thought that maturation will occur, then similarly, there would be the fault of endlessness because what has already matured would mature again. If you think like that, how is it? For example, just as objects are not truly existent, similarly, a person with blurred vision sees the appearance of non-existent hair, etc., but does not see the appearance of other things, such as a donkey's horn and a barren woman's son. Similarly, just as actions are not established by their own nature, know that what has not matured will mature, and what has matured will not mature again. From this example, not only is it certain that the results of actions will definitely be achieved, but also the agreeable and disagreeable results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions are also certain. Just as a person with blurred vision sees hair, etc., but does not see a donkey's horn, etc., because of this certainty, agreeable maturation does not arise from non-virtuous actions, and disagreeable maturation does not arise from virtuous actions. Therefore, non-virtuous maturation, that is, disagreeable, arises from black actions. Virtuous maturation, that is, agreeable, is seen to arise from virtuous actions. Those who have minds without virtuous and non-virtuous actions, that is, who realize that inherent existence is not perceived, will be liberated from samsara. Therefore, the Victorious One has proclaimed the differences in the actions of ordinary beings.

For those who carefully examine with the reasoning of valid cognition the differences between this and that result, and the reasons for the arising of this and that result, thinking that denigrating actions and results will lead to the destruction of conventional reality, the complete ripening of the results of actions is inconceivable. Thus, even the mind that relies on actions and results, i.e., contemplation, is refuted. Know that in this treatise, because of the fear of losing certainty about actions and results from many perspectives, efforts are made from many perspectives to generate certainty about actions and results. On top of the view of emptiness also helping to solidify that certainty, now strive not to let this trip to the Jewel Island go to waste. The second has three parts: the actual words and meanings that dispel scriptural contradictions, the way in which the ālaya-vijñāna, which is different in essence from mind-consciousness, is explained or not explained, and the presentation of examples spoken through the power of intention. The first is: If it is the case that even without the ālaya, the connection of actions and results can be established, then in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra and in the commentaries and in the Mahāyāna Abhidharma Sūtra, the so-called ālaya-vijñāna, the basis of the distinctions of the powers of all phenomena, the basis of all seeds, just as waves arise from the ocean, the cause of the arising of all external and internal phenomena, if that is said, is it something whose nature cannot be established in any way? It is not so, because it is shown that the ālaya exists, and therefore it is shown to those to be tamed that it does indeed exist. This shows that, due to necessity, the ālaya is acknowledged in the presence of those to be tamed. When showing that one has an intention in one's own system, the intention behind what was said is: only emptiness, which is empty of inherent existence. It should be understood that it is shown by the term ālaya-vijñāna. The reason for speaking of the ālaya is that that nature follows all things. Not only is the ālaya-vijñāna shown to exist due to necessity, but also the person is shown to exist substantially, because he shows it to the beings to be tamed, thereby taking them in hand. As it is said: Monks, the five aggregates are a burden. Who is the bearer of the burden?
