Just like placing it outside. Although images and appearances are not placed outside, images and so on are placed outside, so placing and not placing those two outside are the same. The falsity of an image being merely empty of appearance is something that any worldly old person who doesn't incline their mind towards any scripture or reasoning that shows emptiness can understand. Therefore, considering that kind of understanding to be a coarse knowledge is unreasonable. If that were the case, although the image being known as false is established, it wouldn't establish the falsity as established by the Madhyamikas. So, how could the former be an example for the latter? Here, images and so on are given as examples because they are examples that have already been established by worldly people, not examples of something that has already been established as false by the Madhyamikas. That is, for an image that appears as an appearance, one cannot, on the basis of appearance, completely distinguish that this part appears as an appearance and this part does not appear as an appearance. Although any part of the appearance of the appearance is empty because it exists as it appears, it is not contradictory to arise relying on its own cause, and as an example, similarly, when blue appears to be established by its own characteristic, on the basis of blue, the two parts that appear and do not appear to be established by nature appear indistinguishably. When it appears that way, any part of what appears is empty because it exists as it appears, but it is to be argued that it is not contradictory for its own cause to produce it and for itself to produce the result. If, for the image of an appearance, one can understand that there, any part of what appears does not exist as it appears, but one can establish that the image does not disappear, then for blue, even in the part of the appearance that is established by its own characteristic, any part of what appears does not exist as it appears, one can definitely establish that blue exists. To distinguish between the two ways of this being prevented and this not being prevented from forms etc. with subtle wisdom, and to distinguish them from the example of the image, is indispensable for obtaining the Madhyamika view, so one should not be easily satisfied. Therefore, the commentary also says that the image is established as a cause and effect without self-nature, and what wise person would deny forms and feelings etc. with knowledge?

Merely focusing on the existence of those things that are not different from cause and effect, it will necessarily determine their own nature. Therefore, even if focused on existence, they are not born by their own nature. It says that there is merely existence and existence by own nature, and previously birth has been shown, but here it is shown that there is no birth by own nature. Therefore, the distinction between birth and birth by own nature is stated very clearly. If those are not distinguished, then as long as a thing exists, it exists by its own essence; and as long as it does not exist by its own essence, it will completely disappear, and thus it will not transcend the two extremes of imputation and denial. As it says in the commentary of the Śataśāstra: According to those who say that a thing exists, as long as that thing exists, it is indeed its own essence. When it is separated from its own essence, at that time, that thing does not exist in any way. Because it is like a donkey's horn, it cannot transcend dualism. Therefore, all the manifest desires here will be difficult to fulfill. Therefore, since it does not exist by its own essence, it is freed from all extremes of existence; and since it itself has no own nature, it is able to establish cause and effect, thus it is freed from all extremes of non-existence. This seems to be the unique characteristic of the way that Master Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti explained the intention of the noble one. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish between the two existences and the two non-existences. Establishing with the example of an image: In the Meeting of Father and Son Sutra, it says: Just as in a very pure mirror, how an image without own nature appears, know that trees and all things are the same. It is said. Also, understand the way to combine the examples and meanings of other false examples as before. The fifth has two: the advantage of easily abandoning the views of permanence and annihilation, and the advantage of the connection of cause and effect being very reasonable. The first is: Because of the above, all things are like images, because they are empty by existing by their own nature. Because in ultimate truth and conventional truth, or in both, there is no establishment by own nature. Therefore, forms and so on are not permanent because they are established by their own nature, and moreover, they are not annihilation, either. Annihilation is like the annihilation that is said in the case where the seed is not destroyed when the sprout exists. As it says in the Root Wisdom: Previously existed, now does not exist.
