It is also said in the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning: If any place is found, the afflictive serpent, the cunning one, will seize the mind of anyone; those without a place will not be seized. Thus it is said that if any object of true clinging is found, it is said that it will be seized by the serpent of afflictions. Moreover, at the end of the same treatise, it is said: For one who has a mind with a place, why would great afflictive poisons not arise? Thus it is said, this is the supreme view of the noble ones. The connection of the latter two lines is: Those who, although focusing on the nature of forms, etc., wish to abandon afflictions, for those, it is impossible to abandon afflictions. It is said to show this reason. The outer commentary also says: If one focuses on things, then various afflictions such as desire will definitely arise and cannot be avoided. How do they arise? For a while, if the thing is agreeable, then at that time it is difficult to prevent attachment to it. If the thing is disagreeable, then at that time it is difficult to prevent anger, pride, and resentment towards it. Thus it is said. The commentary also says that even if the object is neither agreeable nor disagreeable, ignorance will arise. If a thought is arising in the mind that grasps the object as being established by its own nature, then either desire or hatred will arise, and even if it is not these two, something like delusion will arise. It is also said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: The mind that has an object always dwells, it abides in something, the mind that is devoid of emptiness, after death it arises again, like entering the absorption of non-discrimination. Thus it is said, for this view, these two teachers and Buddhapālita, the three, have no difference in explaining the meaning of the noble ones. By this key point, it is said that liberation can be attained merely by the path of the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., which is intentional. Moreover, the identification of afflictions made based on that path is also incomplete. Relying on these, one can also understand pride, etc. For the uncommon ignorance, the view of the self, and the extreme view, one should also know both the imputed and the innate, but I have not written it because I fear that the words will be too many. Similarly, all phenomena

The noble ones who have become Buddhas, because they have not abandoned the ignorance of the obscuration of knowledge, therefore, in the post-attainment state, there are conceptualizations with appearances, and there is alternation of turning into non-appearance in equipoise. But the Buddhas, with respect to the ultimate and conventional aspects of all phenomena, manifestly, that is, manifestly appearing, completely, that is, without remainder, awakened, that is, realized, therefore, all the flow of conceptualizations of mind and mental factors is completely stopped, so there is no alternation of the presence or absence of conceptualizations of appearance in equipoise and post-attainment. The word "completely" indicates that for other noble ones, cessation in equipoise is only occasional, therefore there is alternation of equipoise and post-attainment. Therefore, "because of practicing the ignorance of the obscuration of knowledge," this sentence is not saying the reason for having appearance, but it is the proof that the presence or absence of appearance in equipoise and post-attainment occurs alternately. The flow of mind and mental factors is considered to be conceptualization, as it is said in the Clear Words: "Conceptualization is the flow of mind, because it is separate from it, therefore that suchness is without conceptualization." As it is said in the sutra: "What is the ultimate truth? If there is not even the flow of mind, what need is there to speak of letters and so on?" This is what is said. The third is: "For ordinary beings, what is the ultimate truth, that itself is merely the conventional truth for those noble ones who have the object of experience with appearance, and its nature, emptiness, is their ultimate truth." The meaning of the former statement is: The pot and so on, which ordinary beings grasp as truly existent, are merely the conventional truth for those three noble ones mentioned earlier who have appearance in post-attainment arising from equipoise, thus it is shown. Therefore, for them, only true existence is refuted, but it is not refuted that conventional truth is truly existent. The object of clinging of ordinary beings who grasp the pot and so on as truly existent is not shown to become conventional truth for the noble ones, because that is impossible. The meaning of the latter statement is that the nature of dependent arising, the nature of phenomena, which is conventional, is shown to be the ultimate truth of the noble ones, therefore the same basis of the pot and so on is conventional in relation to ordinary beings, and ultimate in relation to the noble ones. To speak of reversing the scriptures in this way is fool-
