I, in general, must want to manifest the ultimate truth. Thus, for the time being, controlled by the afflictive ignorance gathered by the limbs of existence, the conventional truth is established, as it is said. The ignorance that grasps phenomena as true, known as the self-grasping of persons and phenomena, is considered the ignorance of the twelve limbs, and therefore is not considered an obscuration of knowledge. The conventional truth is established by the power of that ignorance, the grasping of truth, which means that it shows the way in which truth, the conventional, is established, not that the grasping of truth establishes things like pots and cloths as conventional truths, because what is established by the grasping of truth is considered impossible even in one's own terminology. Therefore, the conventional in 'conventional truth,' which establishes 'truth' from a certain angle, and the conventional that establishes things like pots as existing conventionally, have the same name, so it seems that the meaning is often confused, so it should be well distinguished. So, are these pots and so on true in the conventional sense for all beings who have not attained Buddhahood? Or are there some beings for whom they are not true in the conventional sense? For those who establish forms, sounds, etc., as conventional truths, and for the hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas who have abandoned afflictive ignorance, who see things like illusions, etc., they are of a false nature, not true, because there is no presumption of appearing as true. Explaining the meaning of what was said, there are three kinds of beings for whom things are not true: hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas. Furthermore, the distinction is made because hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas do not cling to either side, that is, all conditioned phenomena are like illusions, although they are empty of inherent existence, they manifestly realize that they appear there, this is one distinction. That much is also present in bodhisattvas below the seventh level and in hearers and solitary realizers who are noble learners, so in order to exclude them, it is said that the third kind of being has abandoned ignorance, which refers to bodhisattvas of the pure lands and hearers and solitary realizers who are arhats, for these three, things are not true. What is not true? That also refers to inner and outer phenomena. The reason for not being true is that there is no presumption of truth, that is, there is no grasping of reality, because there is no clinging to reality.

It is because ignorance is exhausted. Therefore, it is established that the inner and outer dharmas are not truly established in the face of the conventional truth of those three persons. Thus, the commentary says that in the face of those three, the conventional truth is not established at all, but it is established as not true. To assume that it is established as not the conventional truth is because the operation of the mind is too rough, so that the intention of the scholar is contaminated by the dirt of his own mind and explained in a bad way. Such an establishment is not for those three persons, but for the non-truth in the face of those three, for other persons like us. Those who are inferior to those three persons have innate clinging to truth, so for those people, no matter what is conventional, it is impossible to establish it as not truly established. If it is not as previously stated, but it is established as not the conventional truth in their face, then it will become a very irrelevant proof, because in the face of that mind, that basis is established as the conventional truth, it must be established that the basis is false, therefore, taking the reason that there is no clinging to truth is a laughing stock. In the face of that mind, that basis is established as the conventional truth, the reason that the basis must be established as false is that when establishing the truth of the word conventional truth on things like vases, from the two of mind and things, it is not establishing the truth on things, but it is necessary to establish the clinging to truth as the nature of the conventional, when it is seen that it must be so, if that difference is not added, it will not be established as true, and it must be seen as false This is the key. The second is that this sect's understanding of afflictions is different from what is said in the upper and lower divisions, and there is a unique point, so it seems important to understand this, so I will explain it. In the things that cling to reality, there are two kinds of clinging to reality, clinging to the person and clinging to the dharma, and it is considered that this is also two kinds of self-clinging, which has been said before. That clinging to reality is said to be afflictive ignorance in both the commentary on the Entering the Middle Way and the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, and it is said that that ignorance is abandoned by the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Arhats, and in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, it is said that it is abandoned by the Bodhisattva who has obtained forbearance of the unborn dharma. Therefore, afflictive ignorance is incompatible with the realization of the selflessness of suchness.
