If a conventional valid cognition misunderstands, then worldly knowledge misunderstands. For example, the object grasped by the two innate self-grasps is said to be grasped by a harmless sense consciousness. Although it is correct or true relative to the self-satisfied thoughts of worldly people, it does not exist even conventionally. If, because one does not accept correct conventional truth, one does not divide into correct and incorrect, then why are the objects and subjects defiled by ignorance not established as incorrect conventional truth? Because conventional truth must be established by a conventional valid cognition, and if one is to establish incorrect conventional truth, it must be established relative to that. The delusion defiled by the imprints of ignorance cannot be established as delusion by a conventional valid cognition. Fourth, now, in order to explain the general meaning of the delusion of the object of clinging due to the harm of the mind that has already been explained, by way of illustrating specific examples. Because of the heretics whose minds are greatly agitated by the sleep of ignorance, who have perverse and evil tenets in their minds, and who have the harm of seemingly valid reasons. These people who want to enter into suchness, without grasping the non-perverted birth and destruction, etc., which are known to immature beings, even shepherds and women, etc., want to surpass worldly people, just as a person climbing a tree releases the former branch without grasping the latter. They will fall into the valley of evil views due to great downfall, and because they are separated from seeing the two truths well, they will not attain the fruit of liberation. Therefore, whatever qualities, such as the three qualities, etc., that these heretics examine from their own texts, do not exist even in the conventional truth of the world. This well refutes the assertion that something exists in the face of a mind confused by this system, and that it is said to be established as conventionally existent. Similarly, whatever is imputed to illusions, mirages, and images, etc., as horses, cattle, water, and faces, etc., is also not existent even in worldly convention. Thus, what exists conventionally must be established by a valid cognition. Such objects of clinging do not exist even conventionally, but they appear.

Utpala does not think so. Now, the appearance of the five aggregates such as form and sound to the sense consciousness as being established by their own characteristics is due to being defiled by ignorance. Therefore, that consciousness and the sense consciousnesses that perceive images, echoes, and so on, have no difference in terms of delusion or non-delusion in the object of appearance, except for the difference between subtle and coarse. It is impossible for blue and other things to be established by their own characteristics, and for images to exist as faces. However, just as images without faces exist, even if they are not established by their own characteristics, blue and other things must exist. Moreover, just as external objects exist, images are also considered to be the source of form. Because it is also said below that images can generate the sense consciousness that perceives them. Those reasons should also be understood for illusions where horses and cattle appear to the eyes, and for echoes and so on. This is the unique establishment of this supreme system. Second, because the meaning of reality cannot be established by conventional consciousness, therefore, the refutation of other-origination is not done by merely staying in the view of the world, but by acknowledging the vision of reality of the noble ones and refuting it in the ultimate sense. When the distinction of the ultimate is added to this refutation of other-origination, just as the consciousness of an eye with cataracts perceives hairs and so on as objects, but the consciousness not defiled by cataracts does not perceive hairs and so on, this does not harm it. The wisdom without defilements, that is, without outflows, the mind of an ordinary being that has abandoned, that is, separated from it, is defiled by ignorance, so it does not harm the undefiled mind without defilements, that is, without outflows, that is not defiled by ignorance. Therefore, even if other-origination is established in the conventional sense, it does not harm the refutation of other-origination in the ultimate sense. Therefore, the opponent should be ridiculed by the supreme wise ones. Third, there are two: explaining the conventional truth and explaining the ultimate truth. First, there are three: in front of what is the conventional true and in front of what is it not true, and the way in which the mere conventional appears and does not appear to the three types of individuals, and the way in which it transforms into the ultimate truth and the conventional truth in relation to ordinary beings and noble ones. First, there are two: the actual meaning and the explanation of the unique establishment of afflictions. The first is: this
