For sentient beings, ignorance obscures their ability to see the nature of things as they truly are, because ignorance clings to things that are not inherently existent as if they were inherently existent, and this nature of obscuring the seeing of reality is what is meant by "conventional." This is the truth called "conventional truth." It is the recognition of the conventional in which the conventional is established, not the recognition of the conventional in general. This recognition is also as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: "All things arise conventionally, in the ultimate sense there is no self-nature, in the absence of self-nature, what is the error? This is what is called the correct conventional." This means that the mind that mistakes things that are without self-nature in the ultimate sense as having self-nature is conventional. The word "conventional" also has the function of obscuring because it also applies to the words that obscure the conventional. What does it obscure? As it says, "This is what is called the correct conventional," it obscures the true meaning, and therefore it is called conventional or obscuring. That is to say, it does not show the correct conventional among the two, correct and incorrect. Do not confuse the conventional stated in the first line with the conventional stated in the latter two lines. The first line is the conventional in which one admits the arising of things, etc., while the latter two lines are the conventional of clinging to truth, in whose presence things are true. Because of clinging to the conventional as true, blue and other things, even though they are not established by their own nature, still appear as true fabrications, and this appearance is true for sentient beings. Therefore, as mentioned before, the inverted worldly conventional is true in its presence, so the Buddha called it the worldly conventional truth. The Buddha's statement is as stated in the previous sutra. For any third person, things that have become false because they are fabricated by unreal thoughts are not true in the presence of their conventional, so they are called merely conventional. Dependent arising, images, echoes, and other things, even if they are false, appear to those who have ignorance. But blue and other forms, mind, feelings, and other things appear to be true. This is the nature of the reality of all dharmas.

Because for those who possess ignorance, nothing at all appears. Therefore, whatever is also false in conventionality along with that nature is not conventional truth. If explaining the meaning of what was said, to explain a little, it is comfortable like some places in the translation of Naktsö. Images and the like, although false, appear, and it is the appearance as false. That is the falsehood of the collection of the appearance of the face and emptiness, therefore, its emptiness of truth is the emptiness of truth in the face, not the meaning of the emptiness of truth established by the image itself by its own nature. Therefore, even if the image is established as empty of the face, in the face of the conventional that grasps the image as established by its own nature, it is truly existent, because it is a thing without any contradiction, so it is conventional truth. Therefore, saying that the image is not conventional truth refers to the fact that in the face of the worldly conventional who are proficient in words, things like the image of the face, because the face is false, it refers to not relying on its conventional truth. "The conventional that sees falsehood, is said to be true." How could one not acknowledge the conventional truth spoken by this sentence? If it is not so, if there is no truth in conventionality, then it contradicts that conventional truth is true. If it is said that it is established by its own nature, it does not even exist in name, then it contradicts all the distinctions made in all the names that refute true establishment and establish the non-existence of truth. Therefore, images and the like, even the self-satisfied knowledge of worldly people, also know that the objects are illusory, not conventional truth, but merely conventional. Saying this seems to be a statement that does not understand the definite number of the two truths, and the truth and falsehood that depend on worldly people, and the truth and falsehood established by the Madhyamaka school. What is said, that nature does not appear at all to those who possess ignorance, is also because the noble ones who do not abandon ignorance consider directly realizing suchness, so it refers to the knowledge defiled by ignorance. The subsequent wisdom of the noble ones in training, and the view of suchness of ordinary beings, because they are defiled by ignorance and its imprints, do not appear directly.
