On the other hand, that kind of cognition is not merely the absence, nor is it merely different from it, but it is to impute that which is contrary and incompatible, namely, persons and dharmas, as being established by their own nature. In this way, considering the clinging to the self of dharmas as afflictive ignorance, and considering both the clinging to "I" and "mine" as being established by their own characteristics as the view of the perishable aggregate, is inconsistent with the views of the Abhidharma. According to the Abhidharma system, as explained in the ninth chapter of the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, to hold a person as an independently existing substance is the self-grasping of the view of the perishable aggregate, and to hold "mine" as the object of control of that substantially existing person is to establish it as the grasping of "mine" in the view of the perishable aggregate, which is very inconsistent. Holding a person as an independently existing substance may also be present in those whose minds have not been transformed by philosophical tenets, but holding a person as existing as other than the aggregates and different in characteristics is not present in those whose minds have not been transformed by philosophical tenets. Therefore, the view of clinging to extremes is also twofold. If one holds that persons and dharmas exist as established by their own characteristics, then how can these clingings be established as afflictive ignorance and the two self-graspings? Persons and dharmas being established by their own nature will be refuted by the reasoning that refutes self-nature, and at that time, such clinging will become the truth-grasping that is mistaken about the object of clinging, and if this is established, then holding both persons and dharmas as truly established will be established as the two self-graspings. If these are established, then truth-grasping will become incompatible with the knowledge of the meaning of suchness, and therefore it will be established as ignorance. Moreover, it can establish that the view of the perishable aggregate will not cease, and therefore it will be established as afflictive ignorance, so it is very important to be able to understand the unique classification of afflictions. The way in which other afflictions such as desire arise from the delusion of truth-grasping is: The Four Hundred says: "As the body turns freely in the body, so does delusion in all." Its commentary says: "Delusion is because of being confused about how they are truly known, therefore it will more strongly impute the true nature of things. Desire and so on are also the very nature of things that are completely conceived by delusion."

Because of engaging in imputing distinctions such as pleasant and unpleasant, it will become inseparable from ignorance, and it will also rely on ignorance, because ignorance is the main thing. As it is said, from "engaging" up to "engaging," it shows that ignorance is the grasping of truth. Attachment and so on engage in being inseparable from ignorance, which means they engage in being in accordance with ignorance, and not engage in being separate from it. The reason for this is because of engaging from attachment and so on. Among them, imputing distinctions of pleasant and unpleasant to objects is the cause of the arising of attachment and aversion, and it is not improper attention, so it is not showing the way of grasping of attachment and aversion. Therefore, "only what is completely imputed by ignorance" and so on, refers to relying on imputing pleasant and unpleasant to only what is established by its own nature, and then attachment and aversion will arise. The truly established that is established by ignorance is not shown as the object among the two aspects of the object of attachment and so on, but the object of the two aspects of the object of both innate self-grasping, which is the basis of establishment, and attachment and so on are also in accordance with ignorance, so the objects are the same. The aspect of wanting towards the object and the aspect of turning away from what is not wanted, which are led by these two improper attentions, will become attachment and aversion. It is just the aspect of wanting and not wanting that is led by grasping a person as a self-sufficient, substantially existing entity. Because it is not established as desire and hatred, the way of establishing attachment and aversion is also different. "Also relies on ignorance" means that ignorance that grasps self-establishment goes first, and then leads to attachment and so on. The example of the body and the body faculty is like saying that among the other four faculties, the body faculty is established separately without reliance, so all other afflictions also arise relying on ignorance, and they arise without being separated from it. Therefore, because destroying ignorance alone will destroy all afflictions, one should respect the words of emptiness, which are the antidote to this, the dependent arising established by its own nature. This grasping of things as real is also the ignorance that is the root of samsara, and it is also emptiness.
