Furthermore, the twelve links of dependent origination arise. Thus, focusing on phenomena as objects and grasping them as truly established is said to be the ignorance that is the root of samsara. From the ignorance of grasping at phenomena as self arises the ignorance of grasping at persons as self. Therefore, it is said that the twelve links arise from that. To reverse this ignorance, it is necessary to see what it grasps at and the selflessness of what it grasps at. As it is said in the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness": "To see the truth, well knowing things are empty, ignorance does not arise. That is the cessation of ignorance, therefore the twelve links cease." Also, as it is said in the "Praise of Dharmadhatu": "Grasping at 'I' and 'mine,' as long as there is external conceptualization, when the two aspects of selflessness are seen, the seed of existence will be cut off." And: "The supreme mind is the subduer, the nature of phenomena is without inherent existence." Also, as it is said in the "Four Hundred": "If one sees the absence of self in objects, the seed of existence will be cut off. Therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying delusion. If one sees dependent origination, delusion will not arise. Therefore, with all effort, one should speak of this word here." The delusion spoken of in this way is the afflicted ignorance spoken of when identifying the delusion that is one of the three poisons. To reverse this ignorance, it is necessary to understand the meaning of emptiness appearing as dependent origination, that is, to understand the profound meaning of dependent origination. The commentator also said: "The yogi prevents the self." Thus, by refuting the object of grasping at self, one must understand selflessness. Therefore, if one does not refute the object of grasping at self, but merely withdraws the mind from that object, one cannot establish that one has entered into selflessness. The reason for this is that when the mind engages with an object, there are three possibilities: one grasps the object as true, one grasps it as untrue, and one grasps it without distinguishing between the two. Just as one does not necessarily grasp something as true if one does not grasp it as untrue, one does not necessarily enter into the two selflessnesses if one does not enter into the two selves, because there are limitless ways for the mind to abide in the third aggregate. The two ways of grasping at self,

It should be ascertained on one's own continuum that the very basis of one's delusion about what is, must be determined as non-existent as it is apprehended. If it is not so, the refutation and establishment that looks outward is like searching for traces on the grass after a thief has fled into the forest, and will not hit the point. If such a grasping at truth is well recognized, it will be known that there are many conceptualizations that are not self-grasping. Therefore, all the objects grasped by conceptualizations should be refuted by the reasoning that examines that very nature, and all wrong conceptualizations that are desired to be refuted will be reversed. Although there is much that needs to be explained based on these, some have already been explained a lot elsewhere, and some will be explained below, so I will not elaborate here. The second part has two points: establishing the selflessness of phenomena by reasoning, and establishing the selflessness of persons by reasoning. The first part has four points: refuting the four extremes of arising in both truths, refuting the arguments against such refutation, how the arising of dependent origination itself prevents the wrong conceptualizations of grasping at extremes, and identifying the result of having analyzed with reasoning. The first part has three points: establishing the vow of no arising by nature, showing the proof that establishes it by reasoning, and the meaning established by refuting the four extremes of arising. The first point is: among the ten equalities mentioned earlier, only the equality of no arising by nature is shown by reasoning. Thinking that it would be easy to show the other equalities of phenomena, the Blessed One, at the beginning of the Treatise on the Middle Way, stated: 'Not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause. Nowhere are things ever born.' This is briefly stated. 'Ever' and 'any' are synonyms. The word 'nowhere' is a synonym for the word 'somewhere', and the word of dependence that shows the basis of non-arising explains the place, time, and tenets. The word 'what' in which of the three bases does not arise, the word of dependence, expresses the external and internal things. Therefore, the meaning of the texts 'not from self' etc. is: external and internal things can never arise from self in any place, time, or tenet. It should be explained by combining it in this way. Likewise, things can never arise from other, both, and without cause.
