Therefore, one should strive to eliminate arrogance. Secondly, even if the object of focus and the sentient being are not Bodhisattvas, anger will destroy the roots of virtue. Quoted from the Sarvastivada scriptures, the Compendium of Trainings: "Monks, a monk should be like this, prostrating with all limbs to the stupa of hair and nails, observing the mind and the interval in between. Venerable ones, it is like that. Monks, how much is pressed down by this monk, eighty-four thousand yojanas below, until reaching the golden wheel, as many grains of sand as there are, this monk will enjoy that many times the kingdom of a Chakravartin." From there, the Venerable Near-Round folded his palms towards the Bhagavan and said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, if the Bhagavan says that the root of virtue of a monk is so great, then Bhagavan, where are these roots of virtue weakened, completely purified, and completely exhausted? Near-Round, I have not seen such a case as those who practice pure conduct harming each other or causing harm. Near-Round, these great roots of virtue will be weakened, completely purified, and completely exhausted. Near-Round, therefore, even to those who are opposed, one should not harm with the mind, let alone the body with consciousness?" As it is said. Among them, weakening means abandoning the small roots of virtue that produce extremely abundant roots of virtue, and abandoning the small roots of virtue that are produced for a long time, etc., which is the small exhaustion of not destroying all the fruits. Purification means medium exhaustion. Exhaustion means appearing as great exhaustion. Quoted from the Sutra Compendium of the Moon Lamp Sutra, it also says: "Whatever is done with the mind of harming each other, that cannot be saved by discipline or learning, meditation and solitary places do not save, giving and offering to the Buddha also do not save." What is said as mutual refers to fellow practitioners of pure conduct. The six, such as upholding precepts, cannot save, which means that anger destroying the roots of virtue cannot be prevented. The roots of virtue to be destroyed are not clearly stated in the previous sutra, but the Bodhicharyavatara says: Giving and offering to the Sugata

Etc. Entering (the Dharma) is explained through the merit arising from generosity and discipline. The commentary states, "A collection of merit," which does not seem to refer to the root of virtue that perfectly realizes selflessness, and needs to be examined. So, from the sutras taught by Inexhaustible Intelligence, the summarized content is quoted: A drop of water falling into the great ocean will not be exhausted until the great kalpa has not yet arrived. As an example, the root of virtue dedicated to Bodhi will not be exhausted until Bodhi is attained. Also in the Avatamsaka Sutra, it says: A type of mercury appears as gold, and one ounce of mercury, even if it can turn a thousand ounces of iron into gold, That iron cannot exhaust the mercury. As an example, the nature of mercury that generates Bodhicitta cannot be exhausted by all the iron of karma and afflictions. So, can the Bodhicitta that arises and the virtue that is upheld by it, and the virtue dedicated to Bodhi, be destroyed by anger? No, because (the sutra) says that the roots of virtue of the great Bodhisattvas will be destroyed. Therefore, the meaning of the previous quote is: It will not be exhausted after the fruit is produced, but it is not said that it will not be exhausted by anger. The meaning of the second quote is also that, relying on Bodhicitta, just as it can completely cut off karma and afflictions, karma and afflictions cannot harm it in return. Regarding the meaning of destroying the root of virtue, some say that it destroys the ability of previous virtues to quickly produce results, thereby prolonging the time of fruit production, but rather first produces the results of anger and the like. But that is not to say that once it meets with conditions, it will not produce its respective results, because no matter what method the worldly path uses, it cannot abandon the seeds to be abandoned, so it is impossible for afflictions to abandon the seeds. This reason is uncertain, because even the virtue of a common person who has purified non-virtue with the four opponent powers, although the seeds have not been abandoned, it is impossible to produce a fully ripened fruit even if it now meets with conditions. And, when obtaining the peak of the path of application and forbearance, even if the seeds of non-virtue that have become the cause of wrong views and evil destinies have not been abandoned, it is impossible to generate wrong views and fall into evil destinies even if they meet with conditions. Furthermore, in samsara, which karma is heavy, which is near, which is habitual, and which was done first, among these, the earlier ones (mature) first.
