Thus. The sons of the Victorious Ones, arising from the second bhumi, possess the light of discipline that is free from the defilement of immoral conduct. This second bhumi, named Immaculate, lives up to its name, as it can eliminate the suffering of sentient beings' minds caused by immoral conduct. This second bhumi does not belong to the category of samsara, and although it is not the wheel of existence, it is the splendor of existence, because all perfect qualities follow that bodhisattva, and for the benefit of sentient beings, through the power of aspiration, they have obtained the excellent cause of a chakravartin king who rules over the four continents. In the extensive commentary on the Madhyamakavatara, "Illuminating the Profound Meaning," the explanation of the second ultimate bodhicitta is complete. Third, explaining the third bhumi, the Illuminating Bhumi, in four parts: the etymology of the basis of distinction, the qualities of the bhumi that are distinct dharmas, the distinct dharmas of the first three perfections (generosity, discipline, patience), and concluding by stating the qualities of the bhumi. First, the bodhisattva's bhumi, this third bhumi, is called the Illuminating Bhumi. Why is it called the Illuminating Bhumi? Because it lives up to its name, and upon attaining the third bhumi, the fire of wisdom that burns all the fuel of knowable objects arises, as well as the light of self-nature that can pacify all the elaborations of dualistic appearance in meditative equipoise. Moreover, the son of the Sugata who generates the third bodhicitta, at the time of that third bhumi, just as at the time when the sun is about to rise, the appearance of a copper mirror arises, so too will the appearance of wisdom arise for this bodhisattva. This refers to the appearance of red or reddish-yellow light pervading everything in the subsequent attainment of that bhumi. The Ratnavali also says: The third bhumi is the Illuminating Bhumi, Because the light of peaceful wisdom arises, As well as the arising of dhyana and clairvoyance, And because attachment and hatred are completely exhausted. As a result of its fully ripened karma, One especially practices patience and diligence, Becoming a powerful deva, becoming a wise one, Able to avert the desire for sensual pleasures. Thus it is said. Second, in four parts: this bhumi emphasizes the teaching of patience, how to cultivate other forms of patience, the classification of the perfection of patience, and the teaching of other pure qualities that arise on this bhumi. First,

O! In order to explain in more detail the bodhisattva who has attained such a manifestation of wisdom, it is said, "If," and so on. The excellence of generosity and discipline mentioned earlier is because this (bodhisattva) already possesses them. Therefore, here, among the eight paramitas, patience is the most excellent. The way it is excellent is that the practice of patience paramita is extremely outstanding, and the other seven (paramitas) do not appear here. Furthermore, the third-level bodhisattva, in order to protect the minds of others, and because he possesses the peaceful wisdom described as "the firewood of knowledge," is the source of all anger for others. This person (bodhisattva) has harmed me and my relatives in the past, is harming now, and will harm in the future, becoming a person full of such doubts. Because the actions of the three doors (body, speech, and mind) are not manifested in such a way, it is specifically emphasized that "it is not an object of anger." Even so, if some angry people cut off the flesh from the body of such a bodhisattva, not just the flesh alone, but together with the bones, and not cutting off a very large piece, but little by little, not cutting it all at once, but stopping and pausing, not finishing the cutting in a short time, but cutting for a long time, even so, not only will he not generate anger towards the cutter, but for the bodhisattva, because of that sin, he will think of experiencing the suffering of hell and so on more intensely than other similar beings, therefore, towards that cutter, he will generate even more intense patience. This is the excellence of the excellence of patience. Therefore, although in the Joyful Land (first bhumi) and other second bhumis, there is no anger when the body is cut, it is clear that excellent patience does not arise, so it should be known that excellent patience arises from this (third bhumi) onwards. Not only does he generate excellent patience by thinking of the more intense suffering of hell and so on, but also because the body of the bodhisattva who has realized selflessness, who is cutting, what is being cut, at what time, and in what way the three wheels of dharma are cutting, the third-level bodhisattva will see these manifest clearly like images, and because he is free from the conceptual thoughts of self and what belongs to self, therefore, that bodhisattva will endure.
