Therefore, in order to make it the abode of many things, in order to prevent the virtues such as generosity of the Victorious One (Buddha) who has defeated all sins from being wasted, the Buddha spoke of generosity. Immediately following that, the Buddha spoke of discipline, that is, the words of practice that follow generosity. The reason for this is that discipline itself is the field because it is the basis of all virtues. In that field, if the virtues of generosity and so on increase, then, with generosity and so on as the cause, and the body and good enjoyment as the result, from higher to higher, in an uninterrupted way, the accumulation of results increases, and it is possible to enjoy for a long time. Otherwise, it cannot be done that way. Therefore, those who give generosity should not only calculate the perfect enjoyment of the fruit of generosity, but also calculate the perfect body with which to enjoy this enjoyment, and the appearance of this enjoyment in many rebirths. And the way to do that is to emphasize the importance of keeping the precepts. That is the meaning of it. Even a novice Bodhisattva should strive to give generosity as mentioned before. Moreover, it should be done specifically for the benefit of all sentient beings, and with the aim of attaining Buddhahood. But temporarily, it is also necessary for the fruit of generosity to ripen in the body of a good rebirth, and it also needs to appear in many rebirths. This is like relying on discipline. Without discipline, there will be no complete favorable conditions for learning the practice of a Bodhisattva. The fifth point is that both the body and the basis of a good rebirth, and the long-term enjoyment of the fruit of generosity, depend on discipline. Moreover, in order to obtain definitive benefit, discipline is also indispensable. Therefore, in this way, for ordinary people who have not yet entered the path, it is the cause of higher rebirth; for the Shravakas who were born from the words of the Buddha; for those who have decided to embark on the path of solitary enlightenment; and for the prince Bodhisattvas, the cause of definitive benefit, enlightenment, is none other than discipline. The meaning of this is not to say that discipline is the only cause, thereby negating other causes, because there are many causes that are not discipline. Therefore, excellent higher rebirth and definitive victory.

To accomplish the ground, it is necessary to be connected with ethics, and if ethics are abandoned, it will never be accomplished. This is also stated in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds: each of the ten non-virtuous actions, such as killing, is divided into great, medium, and small, and each one leads beings to hell, animals, and hungry ghosts respectively. Ultimately, if born as a human, killing leads to two results: short life and many illnesses. Each of the remaining nine non-virtuous actions also brings two undesirable results. The ten virtuous actions, on the other hand, lead to rebirth in the desire realm gods and humans, up to the peak of existence. Furthermore, if these ten virtuous actions are practiced with a fleeting mind focused only on one's own benefit, along with fear and aversion to samsara, without great compassion, and with wisdom that realizes selflessness by following the words of others, then liberation will be attained through the Hearer Vehicle. Furthermore, in the last existence, without relying on others, focusing on the enlightenment of a solitary buddha, without great compassion and skillful means, and by comprehending the suchness of profound dependent origination, liberation will be attained through the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle. Furthermore, by practicing with extremely vast and immeasurable loving-kindness, possessing compassion, being gathered by skillful means, making great aspirations, not abandoning all sentient beings, and focusing on the Buddha's extremely vast wisdom, the bodhisattva can be completely purified and accomplish the vast and perfect pāramitā practice. This is a summary of what was said. In the Letter to a Friend, it is also said: "You should maintain ethics that are not broken, not inferior, not mixed, not defiled, and pure. Like the earth, which is the basis for generating and not generating, it is well said to be the foundation of all qualities, so guard it well." Therefore, it is very important to learn ethics. Therefore, although it is said in the context of the second ground, it is also necessary for a beginner bodhisattva to refrain from creating the ten non-virtuous actions even from the motivation, and to uphold the vows and guard the ethics of the vows, which is very important. As it is said from "Generosity purifies enjoyments" to "There is nothing superior to ethics," think in that way.
