它的梵语是śīla(शील,戒),śīti(शीति,清凉)意味着清凉,lāti(लाति,获得)意味着获得。

I will show purity, show the praise of discipline, show the contradictory and unmixed examples of discipline, show the classification of the perfection of discipline, and conclude by stating the merits of the ground. The first chapter has four parts: showing the perfection of discipline in this ground, relying on it to show the complete purity of merits, further showing discipline from the first ground, and showing other reasons for the complete purity of discipline. The first part is: the bodhisattva who abides in the second ground, because he has extremely perfect discipline and pure merits, not only when awake, but even in dreams, he abandons the defilement of lax discipline, that is, he is not tainted by it. This is not just the lax discipline of fundamental downfalls and natural transgressions, but it is abandoning the defilement of all lax disciplines that violate the precepts. Because he does not accept all the afflictions that give rise to lax discipline, and does not produce sinful actions that violate the precepts, therefore, for the downfalls that arise from violating the precepts, he obtains coolness by extinguishing the fire of repentance, so it is discipline. Its Sanskrit is śīla (शील, discipline), śīti (शीति, coolness) means coolness, and lāti (लाति, obtain) means to obtain. Or, because it is the cause of happiness, it is what the noble ones should rely on, so it is discipline. This is also an etymological explanation. If viewed from the perspective of essence, it is characterized by the seven abandonments that abandon the seven lax behaviors of body and speech. Non-attachment, non-greed, non-hatred of harmful thoughts, and correct view free from wrong views, because they give rise to the seven abandonments, so if viewed from the perspective of the instigator and the accompanied, it is the abandonment of the ten white paths of action that abandon the ten black paths of action. The second part is: if the bodhisattva's discipline is so perfect, how do merits become pure? The activities of body, speech, and mind, that is, the three behaviors, in waking and dreaming, even subtle downfalls become pure, therefore, the noble one, that is, the ten excellent paths of action, are completely accumulated without being incomplete, that is, the first virtuous path of action, that is, abandoning killing, etc., the first three are of the body, the middle four are of speech, and the last three are the perfection of the mind, this is the meaning of accumulation.

Moreover, it not only avoids prohibitions, but also perfects all aspects of practice based on discipline. Third, if someone asks, can't even the bodhisattvas of the first ground fully practice these paths of virtuous action? Although they can practice them, these ten paths of virtuous action become even more pure and excellent for the bodhisattvas of the second ground, unlike those of the first ground. The reason why it is said that the first ground particularly emphasizes generosity is that, compared to the other nine perfections besides generosity, practices such as patience do not have the excellent practice based on discipline. Therefore, discipline is particularly emphasized, but it is not that there are no other perfections. Mentioning the ten virtues is a symbol of the precepts based on discipline, so all the precepts must be observed. Such pure discipline is like the autumn moon, which can both relieve heat and emit white light. Those who always abide in pure discipline adorn themselves with the peace of guarding the doors of the senses and the light of a luminous body. Fourth, why is it that some monks, starting from the Pratimoksha vows, have very pure discipline, but if they do not abandon the view that phenomena are inherently existent, then, for that reason, that monk will not become pure in discipline, but will be a transgressor disguised as a virtuous one? The Ratnakuta Sutra says: "Kashyapa, here some monks are virtuous, restraining themselves with the Pratimoksha vows, possessing perfect deportment and conduct, fearing even the smallest faults, properly receiving and learning the precepts, with body, speech, and mind completely pure, and living purely, but they say there is a self. Kashyapa, this is the first transgressor disguised as a virtuous one." Starting from here, it says: "Kashyapa, there are also some monks who properly receive the twelve qualities of asceticism, but they are attached to the object of focus, thinking there is a self."
