That which clings to self and what belongs to self is the fourth, like an elder who has violated vows pretending to be virtuous. Thus it is said. To speak of self is to look at the object of focus. Furthermore, this is shown by dwelling on the clinging to self and what belongs to self. Its meaning is not to be taken as the common worldly view, but rather refers to not abandoning the clinging to the self-established nature of self and what belongs to self. If it is like that, then it should not contradict what was just said. If one sees that the nature of discipline is completely pure, then that is a violation of discipline. Thus, it is good to translate "that" as "that." If one does not abandon the view with an object, then the discipline is not pure. Therefore, the bodhisattva on the second ground always abandons the violation of discipline for any sentient being, and whatever antidote to abandonment is practiced, and by whatever means it is abandoned, for all three, the aspect of the mind that clings to the two dharmas, such as things and non-things, as being established by their own nature, is truly separated, that is, it will be abandoned. Secondly, there are five: the fruit of generosity being enjoyed in the happy realms depends on discipline; the fruit of generosity being enjoyed in lifetime after lifetime depends on discipline; if one is without discipline, it is shown that it is extremely difficult to be liberated from the lower realms; after the talk of generosity, the reason for giving the talk of discipline; praising discipline as the cause of both higher realms and definite goodness. The first is: Thus, after speaking of the bodhisattva's discipline being perfect and complete, after that, in general, even if other disciplines are perfect, they have extremely great qualities compared to generosity and so on, and showing that it is the basis of all perfect qualities is: the giver, having given with discipline, will have particularly excellent and complete enjoyments arise among gods and humans, while the temporary hells of falling into the lower realms, and being born as cows, horses, elephants, monkeys, and nagas, etc., and great powerful pretas, etc., will have various complete enjoyments arise, which is caused by the weakening of the foot of discipline of beings, that is, being separated from it. This is because if one is without discipline, then the enjoyments of the fruits of generosity given by that person will not ripen on the basis of the happy realms.

Therefore, it is shown that the result of generosity matures into a basis for bad migrations. If one desires that the result of generosity matures into a basis for good migrations, then the giver of generosity should maintain ethical conduct, as previously stated. Secondly, if one is without ethical conduct, the result of generosity will mature into a basis for bad migrations, and in that state, one can only enjoy the fruits of previous generosity, because one is extremely foolish and unable to newly perform generosity or other virtuous deeds. The accumulated wealth, including interest, is completely exhausted by spending the principal. Once all the fruits of previous generosity have been enjoyed, that person will no longer have any enjoyment. This is like a person who, from sowing a small amount of seeds, obtains a great harvest. To obtain even more fruit, he sows even more seeds, so that the accumulation of fruit continuously increases. However, if someone is foolish and does not sow any seeds, but only knows how to enjoy, then the fruit will not increase continuously. Thirdly, because the foundation of ethical conduct is broken, not only is it difficult to obtain continuously increasing enjoyment, but once one has gone to bad migrations, it is extremely difficult to escape from them. The text explains: When a hero dwells in a harmonious place, like being freed from bonds, he is completely independent of others and acts freely according to his own wishes. When he dwells in a harmonious place, that is, the realm of gods and humans, if this person does not prevent himself from falling into bad migrations, it is like a hero being imprisoned and abandoned in a deep mountain. Once he falls into the abyss of bad migrations, he is involuntarily controlled by others. Once one has gone to bad migrations, who can rescue him from that later? No one can do that. In the state of bad migrations, performing virtuous deeds is very rare, while committing evil is very easy, so one must continuously transmigrate in bad migrations. For this very reason, it is also said in the sutras: Even if one out of a hundred people is born among humans, they can only accomplish two kinds of maturation (good and evil), showing how difficult it is to be reborn as a human. Therefore, from now on, one must prevent oneself from falling into bad migrations, and to do that, one must strive to maintain ethical conduct. Fourthly, because breaking ethical conduct leads to faults such as falling into bad migrations.
