Furthermore, in the Sutras of the Lesser Vehicle, when emptiness is taught, the teaching of emptiness by showing the exhaustion of conditioned phenomena, these two have the same meaning. Therefore, it is said (in the scriptures) not to be intolerant of the teaching of emptiness in the Great Vehicle. Regarding the view that these two have the same meaning, some say: If the Hearers accept the exhaustion of things, then if there is inherent existence, exhaustion is unreasonable. If they accept exhaustion, then they must first accept that there is no inherent existence, therefore these two have the same meaning. This explanation is very unreasonable. If that were the case, then for whatever phenomena the Madhyamikas believe to exist, such as sprouts, etc., because that reason exists, then all sprouts, etc., and emptiness would become extremely excessive. In the commentary on the Ratnavali, it says: There is no birth, and there is no difference in meaning in an instant. This is also an explanation that does not understand the meaning of the scripture. In the Sutra of the Lesser Vehicle quoted in the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning, it says: Whoever has completely abandoned this suffering, निश्चितं प्रहाण (Tibetan: ངེས་པར་སྤངས་པ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: निश्चितं प्रहाण, Sanskrit Romanization: niścitaṃ prahāṇa, Chinese literal meaning: निश्चितं प्रहाण), has certainly abandoned it, has become purified, has exhausted it, is free from desire, निरोध (Tibetan: འགོག་པ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: निरोध, Sanskrit Romanization: nirodha, Chinese literal meaning: निरोध), has become nearly pacified, has ceased, does not connect the boundary of other sufferings, does not arise, does not come into being, this is peace, this is excellent, like this, all aggregates have been certainly abandoned, भवक्षय (Tibetan: སྲིད་པ་ཟད་པ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: भवक्षय, Sanskrit Romanization: bhavakṣaya, Chinese literal meaning: भवक्षय), desire has been abandoned, निरोध (Tibetan: འགོག་པ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: निरोध, Sanskrit Romanization: nirodha, Chinese literal meaning: निरोध), cessation, Nirvana. It is said like this. When explaining its meaning, because it is said with the proximate word 'this suffering,' is it referring only to the suffering or aggregates of one's own continuum in the present? Or is it referring to the future suffering, from completely abandoning to ceasing, and from not connecting the boundary of other sufferings to Nirvana? If one thinks that the difference between 'this suffering' or 'this aggregate' is that the general term that includes afflictions refers to the particular, that is also not permissible, because a general term cannot be explained in terms of the general meaning, it must be explained in terms of the particular, but here it can be explained from the level of the general term. If it is done in that way, then like the Vaibhashikas, as it is said in the Uttaratantra, because afflictions have been exhausted from the beginning. As it is said, the aggregates have no inherent existence from the beginning, therefore it cannot be explained as being exhausted from the beginning, because it is through the path.

If it is necessary to explain complete abandonment, then, when there is nirvana to be attained, there is no one to attain it; and when there is someone to attain it, the aggregates have not been exhausted, so there is no nirvana to be attained. In this way, this sutra cannot be explained. According to us, the exhaustion here is not exhaustion by an antidote, but it is called exhaustion because it is exhausted from the beginning. Such an explanation is sufficient, so we can explain the meaning of the sutra well. Therefore, the sutra shows such exhaustion, and the showing of the cessation of suffering, the cessation of nirvana, and the showing of the cessation of no self-nature, the two meanings are the same, because the noble ones say so, it seems that they have not understood, so I will explain it in detail. It is also said in the Root Wisdom Treatise: 'The Blessed One knows existence and non-existence, in the teaching to Katyayana, he rejected both views of existence and non-existence.' This shows that the Hinayana sutras also speak of rejecting the two extremes. This sutra appears in the Samyuktagama Sutra. These are just a few mentions, and there are many that are not quoted here in the Garland of Jewels, as well as the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning and the Collection of Praises. The third part is divided into two parts: refuting the arguments raised in the commentary, and refuting the arguments not raised there. The first part is: The commentary says: 'If the Hearer Vehicle also shows the selflessness of phenomena, then the showing of the Great Vehicle becomes meaningless,' that kind of view is also understood to be contrary to reason and scripture. The one who speaks of this former view is the teacher Lekden, and Buddhapalita, in his commentary on the Seventh Chapter of the Seventy Emptiness, explains the meaning of the sutras of the Hinayana that say that all phenomena are selfless, as the meaning that phenomena have no self-nature, but in the Lamp of Wisdom, he refutes it, saying that if this is the case, then the showing of the Great Vehicle becomes meaningless. In response to this, does it generally say that the showing of the Great Vehicle becomes meaningless, or does it say that the showing of the selflessness of phenomena in the Great Vehicle becomes meaningless? If it is the former, then if that inference has generality, then the showing of the Great Vehicle would only show the selflessness of phenomena, but this is not the case, because in the Great Vehicle there are also the bodhisattva grounds, and generosity, etc.
