The selflessness of the person, which is commonly known to the proponents of the tenets of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, only negates the gross self of the person, but it should be known that it does not negate the subtle self of the person. Therefore, according to this teacher's view, the way in which the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the selflessness of the person is taken to be the same as other proponents of tenets, and they differ only in whether or not they realize the selflessness of phenomena. This shows that this view has not been well understood, because the scriptures say that if one is separated from the view of suchness, one will not realize the selflessness of the person. Then, the scriptures say that because of the two feet (self-view), the karma that binds one to samsara is accumulated due to its power, and that one is born in samsara due to the power of karma. This is in terms of the power of the object of clinging to the belief in the aggregates as true not being refuted, not merely because there is a self-view. Even up to the seventh ground there is self-view, but from the first ground onwards one does not take birth due to the power of karma. These scriptures show that if one is separated from meditating on the view of suchness, one cannot cause the self-view to be exhausted. Therefore, if there is only the path of the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., there is no abandonment that exhausts the afflictions. Thus, since the establishment of the uncommon way of establishing the selflessness of the person, if one relies only on the common selflessness of the person, and leaves the ways of identifying afflictions such as self-view as they are, then the uncommon tenet will become a great confusion without a conclusion. How could this wise one err in this? Therefore, one should contemplate establishing the scriptures that explain that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the selflessness of phenomena, and these followers who do not even have the thought of whether or not there is an uncommon way of establishing the ways of identifying afflictions, are merely faithful to this tenet. Representing this, there are many other phenomena that should be well investigated. The three paths are the three contaminations of affliction, karma, and birth. These three have no beginning, no end, and no middle, because karma arises from affliction, suffering arises from karma, and from suffering also arise similar karma and afflictions, etc., so they arise mutually, without a fixed order of precedence, that is, they are mutual.

The Meaning of Illusion No. Dependent origination does not arise from self, other, or both. Moreover, in all three times—past, present, and future—it has never obtained self-nature, that is, seeing non-existence or not seeing it. Because the destructive view of self-grasping born of reason is exhausted, the cycle of wandering in samsara ceases. After that, having determined that the aggregates, elements, etc., are without self-nature, just as they are, knowing that beings are without meaning, like a fire without cause, one passes into nirvana without a place or taking. Thus, it is said that one passes into nirvana after seeing the meaning of suchness. If asked, is such a view only within the realm of bodhisattvas? The answer is: Such a statement is made with the realm of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas in mind. Because immediately after "nirvana" it is said: "Thus, bodhisattvas also, having seen, definitely desire bodhi. However, they, with compassion, connect existence until bodhi." and so on. The texts of the Ratnāvalī quoted in the commentary are not well translated in the earlier translations. In the Sutra Spoken for the Śrāvakas, it is also said: In order for the śrāvakas to abandon the obscurations of afflictions, form is like a mass of foam, feeling is like a bubble on water, perception is like a mirage, formations are like a banana tree, and consciousness is like an illusion. The Kinsman of the Sun (Śākyamuni Buddha) thus instructed. Thus, with five similes, it is analyzed that conditioned things are without self-nature. In the Bodhicitta Commentary, it is said: The Teacher taught the five aggregates to the śrāvakas and that form is like foam, etc., to the bodhisattvas, thus distinguishing the difference. This is said with regard to the śrāvakas who are temporarily unable to realize suchness, not with regard to all śrāvakas, because it is said therein: Those who do not know emptiness are not a basis for liberation. In the prison of the six realms of existence, the deluded will wander in this. Therefore. In the Hīnayāna Piṭaka, the meaning of the non-self-nature of phenomena is also shown. As it is said in the Ratnāvalī: In the Great Vehicle, non-arising is taught, the exhaustion of others is emptiness. The meaning of exhaustion and non-arising is actually the same, so be patient. Thus, in the sutras of the Great Vehicle, the emptiness of non-self-nature has been taught.
